Emulating all character dialog, including the women's, Ericson uses his versatile, clear, well-modulated voice effectively. He manages believable, if not authentic, Scottish accents and generally is able to help the listener distinguish among the many characters. In one of the multiple story lines, Jeff Holt leaves his fur-trapping business to return east and find his wife, Melissa. Melissa's father tries to keep Jeff from finding her while Melissa contends with an unwanted suitor. Meanwhile, Jeff's brother Clay and Clay's Sioux wife lead a difficult, dangerous expedition up the Yellowstone River. While offering a realistic view of the dynamic, perilous Old West era, the action and story development are often slow. Additionally, while the production quality is excellent, some of the dialog is stilted and dull. Ross's (Independence!, Audio Reviews, LJ 10/1/93) standard, slightly grandiose historical adventure, with its Western approach and romantic subplot, should appeal to a limited audience. If I could sum this up in one word is exciting! Better than Westward. Professor Franklin was truly a brave man to give his life, so Clay Holt and the others could escape. I was happy that Jefferson Holt and Melissa were reunited. I can't wait to read Outpost. My only problem with this book, is that Shining Moon got raped. The author didn't have to put a rape scene in there in my opinion, but I understand that he wanted some reality in the story. I hope Jefferson's Father-in-law gets whats coming to him in Outpost. The suspense is killing me.

I have read all of the Dana Fuller Ross "Going West" books. They were like reviewing the history of the United States, although some may have been fiction. They are well worth reading. The Trilogy's were hard to find, but I just kept searching and did get most of the missing books from Amazon.com
