Book Description

June 1 1981 Library of Spiritual Classics (Book 2)
One of the most influential spiritual books ever penned, even secular historians acknowledge the great impact Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ has had in Christian history. Madame Guyon is generally credited, even by her enemies, as being one of the best-known women in church history. Will Durant, in his 11-volume Story of Civilization, recounts the impact of Jeanne Guyon's life and writings on French history.
At one time this book was publicly burned in France and yet it has also been received by seeking Christians as one of the most helpful and powerful Christian books ever written. Penned by one of Christianity's most famous saints, Jeanne Guyon, it has played a major part in the lives of more famous Christians than perhaps any other Christian book. Here is the very first edition written in modern English.
Watchman Nee saw that this book was translated into Chinese, and made available to every new convert of The Little Flock. Fenelon, Count Zinzenforf, John Wesley, the early Quakers, Jessie Penn-Lewis and Hudson Taylor all highly recommended it to the believers of their day.
This book will introduce you to a whole new-and deeper-relationship to Jesus Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiencing the Depts of Jesus Christ May 12 2000

Without doubt the most important book I've read.
Madame Guyon has reached depths in Christ which we cannot understand without having gone there ourselves. This book will inspire all to go deeper in there walk, no matter where they find themselves.
A must read for every Christian. Truly a classic. Most important piece of literature from any century. I will reread many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to Inner abode Dec 8 1998
By A Customer
I read and reread this book. For those who follow Fr.Keating's books on seeking God within, this is an excellent companion. They seemed to be saying the same things! That God lives in your heart and through comtemplation He will draw you to himself. Guyon does not come out with a specific prayer methodology like Keating but she speaks the same things, prayer of silence, letting go of the false self, abandonment to God. Strange chpt 2 is kind of asterixed, I considered it extremely foundational.
This is a classic and I say get Keatings books as you get this and you have a solid intro to the Christian spiritual journey.
Ps: this is not journey of bliss and Guyon tells about the travail you will go through until you reach the inner abode where God resides and where your true self can be found...

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Pray July 29 2000
I enjoyed this book. Madame Guyon (1648-1717) describes a "short and very easy mehod of prayer; which all can practice with the greatest facility, and arrive in a short time, by its means, at a high degree of perfection." She talks directly to the reader in a patient voice. The beginning of the book is for people who are just starting out to pray. From that part, I learned about "praying the scripture", which involves reading carefully. Finally, the book ends with what Madame Guyon calls the "ultimate stage of Christian experience. Divine Union" If you are interested in learning to pray, this is an interesting book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic christian living! July 21 2002
I've read this book and am now going through it out-lining each chapter. Jeanne Guyon gets back to the basics of Christ Jesus living in us and through us to make a difference for us. She is very much like Paul in her thinking as in this book she points out again and again that the works of our flesh count for nothing. But, what does count is Christ Jesus living in us and loving through us. She is also careful to point out certain points of growth that all christians must go through, such as an initial time of feeling God's presence and dry times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transformative July 13 2003
This book has had a more practical and immediate transformative effect on my walk than any other I have read. The first twenty pages alone are worth the price of purchase.
Two types of prayer are offered-- "Praying the Scriptures" and "Beholding the Lord"-- that allowed me to move from a "head" understanding of God towards a much better "heart" understanding. My quiet times have been transformed from a laundry list of my requests for God into a genuine opportunity to abide in his presence. (John 15:4-8)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for new Christians Sept. 9 1999
By A Customer
I highly recommend Guyon for new believers. We just had a revival in our community that saw dozens of youth come to Christ. I will get copies for each of our own church youth and suggest they read it along with their Bible. Again, as a Pastor and spiritual director I highly recommend it.
