4.0 out of 5 stars Before Lara Croft, there was Ray!, Mar 7 2003
By
J. Alford (Atlanta, GA. United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Explorer Woman Ray (VHS Tape)
In the tradition of Indiana Jones, a hot female archeologist tries to stop a ruthless grave robber from taking an ancient treasure capable of godlike powers. Ray Kizuki teams up with two thieving little teenyboppers to find a temple where this device might be found. With the help of a strange mirror left to her by her father, Ray tries tracks down its location. But the wicked Rig Veda and his cronies hope to get it too. There's lots of great action and adventure in this, right out of a Bond movie. You'd be suprised that you weren't watching a Spielberg flick after seeing this awesome 2-part OVA!

2.0 out of 5 stars Ray is 'Tomb Raider'... before there was a Lara Croft, Feb 28 2000
This review is from: Explorer Woman Ray (VHS Tape)
Ray is Lara Croft in more practical clothing. Her adventures also pre-date Lara Croft by several years.

I wish I could give this tape more than just Two Stars, because the first of the two episodes of 'Explorer Woman Ray' contained on it is truly top-notch. It is *exactly* what a 'Tomb Raider' cartoon should be like if such an item is ever made.

The story in the first episode is tight, the animation is top-notch, even bit-players in the supporting cast are interesting characters, and the action keeps coming fast and furious.

Unfortunately, the second episode on the tape is as bad as the first one is good. The story is dull and plodding, the animation is about the level of 'Thunder Cats,' the characters are uninteresting (even the ones that were charming in the first episode), and the action scenes feel forced and are universally poorly conceived.

This is one video that started with a bang and went out with a whimper. And, sadly, the good does not manage to outweigh the bad.
