Product Description

RED CLIFF opens with power hungry Prime Minister-turned-General Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) seeking permission from the Han dynasty Emperor to organize a southward-bound mission designed to crush two troublesome warlords that stand in his way, Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen). As the expedition gets under way, Cao Cao's troops rain destruction on Liu Bei's army, forcing the latter to retreat. Liu Bei's military strategist Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) knows that their only hope for survival is to form an alliance with rival warlord Sun Quan, and reaches out to Sun Quan’s trusted advisor, war hero Zhou Yu (Tony Leung). Vastly outnumbered by Cao Cao’s fast approaching, brutal army, the rebel warlords band together to mount a heroic campaign unrivalled in history that changes the face of China forever. Contains the full 282 minute extended cut of the film.

John Woo has finally delivered a masterpiece that combines his mastery of storytelling and action, and the latest in film technology with a deep love for his Chinese heritage.
This complex story of one fateful military encounter in 208AD has costumes, sets, weapons, and set pieces that are eye-popping, especially in Blu-Ray, and characters who are more than just symbols.
CG technology does not detract from the storytelling and the deployment of some 1500 Chinese soldiers in land and naval battles is spectacular. The sheer enthusiasm of all involved manifests in the astonishing power and beauty this 5-hour-long film .

John Woo's amazing epic period drama Red Cliff is a major accomplishment. The film is visually stunning and makes clear China's historic battle by detailing the strategies of war. It runs at approx. 4 1/2 hours and is shown in 2 parts on 2 discs. Almost as epic is the fascinating bonus documentary, Making of Red Cliff. (Running at approx. 2 1/2 hrs., it is perhaps second only to Eleanor Coppola's Heart of Darkness: The Making of Apocalypse Now, where problematic similarities include: main actor changes, weather issues, tiger issues etc.) Other extras include storyboards, plus storyboarded sequences and an extensive interview with masterful director John Woo. This gorgeous and innovative epic is highly recommended for fans of film, history, period war battles, and of course John Woo.

Great masterpiece by John Woo and by far the best movie among the works done so far from Chinese Cinema on depicting Chinese History. Wonderfull locations, nice fight/battle sequences, realistic looking props are few of the elements that make this movie stand out from others.

Elegent way of storytelling, wonderful details about each iconic character of the Chinese history that were involved in the events that lead to the Battle of the Red Cliffs between the allied forces of Liu Bei and Sun Quan against the over ambitious General turned Prime Minister Cao Cao.

This extended version comprises of 2 discs with total play time of 5 hours which is approximately 2.5 hours per disc.
