One of Canada's top novelists examines the life and work of another Canadian Great.
Both Richler and Vassanji are award-winning novelists who regarded themselves as outsiders in their respective societies—one a Jew in Quebec, the other an Indian in Tanzania who emigrated to Canada. Their experiences were vastly different, but their perspective as outsiders allows each a unique viewpoint. With narrative flair and surprising insights, Vassanji explores the life and artistic quest of the prolific Montreal satirist who died in 2001.
M.G. Vassanji was born in Kenya and raised in Tanzania. He attended university in the United States, where he trained as a nuclear physicist, before coming to Canada in 1978. Vassanji is the author of six novels and two collections of short stories. His work has appeared in various countries and several languages, and he has twice won the Giller Prize. His most recent novel, The Assassin’s Song, was shortlisted for both the Giller Prize and the Governor-General’s Award. He is a member of the Order of Canada and lives in Toronto.

This review is from: Extraordinary Canadians: Mordecai Richler: A Penguin Lives Biography (Hardcover)
A superbly written book that beautifully evokes a life, a time, and many places. I found it hard to put it down. Richler's story is presented in the context of his Jewish background and its history, that of Canada and Montreal, as well as of post-war Europe, where Richler came of age and embarked upon his writing career. I highly recommend this book.
