Get out your handkerchiefs. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is all about warm fuzzies, tear-jerking, and a lot of cool houses. In this edition (it should be noted that the DVD is a best-of from Season One, not the complete season), a crew, led by former Trading Spaces carpenter Ty Pennington, finds families with extreme needs, such as a child allergic to his mold-infested house and a pair of siblings who became guardian to their six younger brothers and sisters when their parents died within days of each other. They send the family off on vacation for seven days and work around the clock to gut, design, build, and decorate their dream house. Watching them bicker (particularly between building planner Constance Ramos and exterior designer Preston Sharp) and stress out over making their deadline, you wonder: why don't they just keep the family out of the house an extra day or two? But then again, that's what creates drama.

Some of the transformations are truly impressive: a family of three sons receives a mini-baseball field at 1/7th scale in their backyard, complete with authentic Dodger Stadium grass. A tri-level home is completely transformed--including an elevator--to accommodate a teen in a wheelchair. Sometimes they even throw in bonus prizes: a grill the size of a truck for a community mother figure who liked to barbecue for the homeless in her front yard; paying off the mortgage for the eight siblings living on their own. While the ideas make for good television, some of their shtick is all too repetitive, particularly prank-calling each family on vacation to trick them into thinking their house will be lined with fluorescent orange carpet. Host Pennington is especially guilty of this, and his hunk-on-sugar routine can get tiresome. Still, if you enjoy watching nice people's dreams come true, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will tickle your fancy. --Ellen A. Kim

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Job I ever had, Oct 12 2005
By joseph Corey "party favors columnist" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (DVD)
I had a chance to work on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on the episode involving the Sears family (they lived in Oakland). I have worked on so many TV shows as local crew, but this was the first time that I finished the day knowing that I had done something good in the course of a production. We weren't making fantasy or lame basic cable entertainment. We were changing lives. This is one of the true giving shows on TV. This family had been through so much trouble with the daughter's condition over the last year. It felt so nice to be there when Ty told them that they would be able to return home because the show was building them a house that she can live in. I had tears in my eyes when I drove home.

Ty and the gang truly do the work of angels.

4.0 out of 5 stars The DVD is missing some of the Season 1 episodes., Nov 24 2005

I was very disappointed to find the DVD was not actually the full Season 1. Missing from it are the Hardin family, Tugwell family, Imbriani family, Mc Crory family and the Friends Helping Friends episode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!!!!!!, Aug 28 2005

When the words "reality tv show" is spoken, this is the type of show that pops into mind. It's not a show where people vote other people off, or a show where backstabbing and lies are the name of the game.

This is a show where a group of people pick a truly deserving family and change their lives by changing their style of living. The families stories are truly inspirational and always bring a tear to the eye. It is the type of show that the entire family can sit down to watch together and where no one will be offended or turned of by language or behaviors.

As for the two discs, there have been other series released with 2 discs...and the episodes have been on both sides of the disc. This helps save money for the consumers and make the packages smaller. Also, there were only 13 episodes in the first season. Therefore, putting all the episodes on two discs would be possible. Although I'm not sure that this is what they are planning on doing.

However they are released, they will definately be bought by me. I encourage anyone considering this series to give a shot. I guarentee you will turn off the tv feeling more inspired.
