Book Description

Although LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT allows anyone to build complex inventions, there are limits to what you can do with what comes inside the box. This book shows you how to advance the NXT with more than 45 exciting projects that include creating a cool magic wand that writes words in thin air, building a remotely guided vehicle, and constructing sophisticated robots that can sense color, light, temperature, and more. All projects are explained with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, so you’ll be able to create them successfully whether you’re a novice or an expert. This book also shows you how to expand the programming software and use the alternative language NXC.

New input devices—such as keypads, sensors, and even the human body—are covered, along with fun games such as surfing, PONG, and SIMON. On the serious side, there are classic engineering challenges such as controlling an inverted pendulum, making a robot that follows a wall, and building several light-seeking vehicles. Some projects are just entertaining, such as the Etch-A-NXT; others are useful, such as a motorized camera mount that takes panoramic photographs.

This second edition accounts for the important changes found in the next generation NXT, and it also covers the original concepts in greater depth. Details are presented for practically unlimited expansion of the NXT inputs and outputs by using the I2C communications bus, and several power amplifier designs allow the NXT outputs to drive bigger motors. Instructions are also included for adapting LEGO Power Functions motors to work directly with the NXT.

In the book you'll learn how to

  • Create sophisticated new sensors for light, magnetism, temperature, pressure, humidity and angle
  • Advance your nxt creations with alternate software, bluetooth communications, new motors, and muscle wires
  • Build a galvanic skin response meter, magic wand, numeric keypad, and panoramic camera controller
  • Play pong, simon, and surfing games

About the Author

Michael Gasperi has been an expert in LEGO Mindstorms sensors since they were first introduced in 1998. His popular web site and contributing chapters to Extreme Mindstorms (Apress, 2000) have guided many people through the process of building their own extensions to the kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Robotics & Electronics Construction Using Lego Mindstorms NXT, Feb 16 2010
By Ira Laefsky "Ira Laefsky" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Extreme NXT: Extending the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT to the Next Level, Second Edition (Paperback)
This well organized book on customizing the Lego NXT Robotic System serves several hobbyist and educational goals in an outstanding fashion. It is a full introduction to sensors, actuators, and microcontroller-based robotics in the context of the Lego NXT System. In the process of describing the sensors, customization of NXT parts and support chips and electronics it provides an excellent introduction to hobbyist electronic construction. Finally, together with David Cook's excellent "Robot Building for Beginners", also in the excellent Apress Series, it provides a though introduction to the parts and techniques for constructing and debugging all types of hobbyist robotics and electro-mechanical systems. The differences from the previous excellent edition of "Extreme NXT" are subtle yet important: improved illustrations of construction technique are provided throughout the book; exciting additional projects on GSR (skin resistance measurement) and interfacing the NXT brick with a keyboard interface liven this edition, additonal explanatory material is included in the chapter on I2C interfaces and in Appendix A on electronic construction techniques.

I would recommend this excellently presented and illustrated book as a well organized tutorial in many aspects of robotics and electronic construction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor! This book is not really a LEGO NXT book!, Mar 30 2011

This review is from: Extreme NXT: Extending the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT to the Next Level, Second Edition (Paperback)
My 10-year-old son is very into LEGOs and participates in LEGO League at school. We're always interested on looking at books covering LEGO building techniques and the LEGO NXT/Mindstorms sets and this one sounded fun. HOWEVER, the description is misleading and doesn't really clue the buyer into the content and intent of the book, which is NOT to explore the world of LEGO NXT, but to build DIY electronics projects using LEGO NXT parts. If you are looking for electronics projects and have a Mindstorms set lying around waiting to be hacked (as well as assorted electronics odds and ends and soldering equipment), then this is the book for you! We're talking DIY circuit boards and using blowtorches to melt holes in light bulbs kinds of project here. NOTE that you need to be OK with taking things apart and rendering them ineligible for competition! If, like us, you're looking to expand your knowledge of the possibilities within the constraints of the NXT sets and software, you're out of luck.
