Product Description

Sherlock Holmes, just thirteen, is a misfit. His highborn mother is the daughter of an aristocratic family, his father a poor Jew. Their marriage flouts tradition and makes them social pariahs in the London of the 1860s; and their son, Sherlock, bears the burden of their rebellion. Friendless, bullied at school, he belongs nowhere and has only his wits to help him make his way.

But what wits they are! His keen powers of observation are already apparent, though he is still a boy. He loves to amuse himself by constructing histories from the smallest detail for everyone he meets. Partly for fun, he focuses his attention on a sensational murder to see if he can solve it. But his game turns deadly serious when he finds himself the accused — and in London, they hang boys of thirteen.

Shane Peacock has created a boy who bears all the seeds of the character who has mesmerized millions: the relentless eye, the sense of justice, and the complex ego. The boy Sherlock Holmes is a fascinating character who is sure to become a fast favorite with young readers everywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Read, Nov 4 2007
By N. Manning (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Young Sherlock Holmes is a poor boy of a mixed-marriage (Jew and Gentile) and is an outcast even in the impoverished outcast society he lives within. He becomes fascinated with the brutal murder of a young lady nearby and as he tries to find out about the murder he finds the finger of the law pointing to himself. Sherlock must find the real murderer to save not only himself but a wrongly accused Arab youth.

I really enjoyed this book. The Sherlock Holmes character develops through the book and we find the answers to many questions as to why Holmes is the way he is. The Victorian atmosphere is dark and moody as are the cast of characters. We also meet with a smile a few familiar characters from the canon of Holmes. The fast-paced plot and a bloody murder make for a riveting read. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and skillful look at the young Holmes, Jul 25 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
It only takes a few pages for you to realize that Peacock has got London in his head, and that he has the skill to conjure up foggy 1800's London for you on the page. The writing is of quite a high level and the atmosphere is very well created.
His imagining of the young Holmes is very done as well. It has been a while since I read them, but I don't think the Conan Doyle stories ever even hint at Sherlock's early life. Peacock therefore has a lots of leeway in creating the young Sherlock. He does a good job with Sherlock's personality, though I found his take on Sherlock's parents a little overly romantic (kind of a romeo and juliet "lovers from two different houses" thing).

The best thing about the book is actually Sherlock's run ins with Malefactor (kind of an Artful Dodger character, but much more intelligent and angry). I suppose Malefactor is meant to be the young Prof. Moriarty from the adult stories. It's interesting to see them together on the streets of London as youths, and Malefactor is actually interesting enough to deserve his own series.

I do have a few misgivings about this book:

a) For people who have read the Sherlock Holmes stories, they'll find this imagining of his backstory interesting because they already know the adult Holmes. I'm not so sure that readers who don't know the Conan Doyle stories will find this young adult hero so interesting.

b) The actual mystery that Holmes solves in this book left me a little bored. Someone with a glass eye commits a murder - at the end it turns out to be someone we never otherwise meet in the book... if this were a play, the murderer would never actually appear on stage except as a blurry shadow.
