3.0 out of 5 stars JOHN FOGERTY- EYE OF THE ZOMBIE 1986, Mar 9 2004
This review is from: Eye Of The Zombie (Audio CD)
Weird! I don't know what John was thinking when he was making this album, but the songs on here are not songs that you would expect to hear from the guy who wrote "Proud Mary" and "Travelin' Band."

"Eye Of The Zombie" is totally 80's. There are tons of synthesizers that would make a guitar purist puke. Like me. I have no idea what any of these songs mean, or why John decided to write about them, but there are a few "good ones." "Violence Is Golden" is good while confusing you at the same. "Pass another plate of shrapnel/ Sprinkle it with TNT/ Have another grenade salad/ Share it with your enemy." What? I'm so confused. The only song that really makes sense is "Sail Away." I don't even know what it is about, but the words go good together and it is catchy. It is a good way to end an album.

Highlights:
"Change In The Weather"
"Violence Is Golden"
"Sail Away"

3.0 out of 5 stars Huh...., April 21 2003

Not much to get excited about here. I'm actually wondering if maybe three stars isn't a bit too generous, because John Fogerty's synth-laden follow-up to his 1985 #1 comeback album "Centerfield" is largely a very disappointing affair. Especially considering what Fogerty is actually capable of.

I consider Mr Fogerty one of the best songwriters in American rock history, but having heard the fabled, unrelesed "Hoodoo" album I can't help but wonder why Fogerty decided to shelve that one, yet released this bleak, lackluster record (albeit ten years later).

The opening number, a synthesizer/guitar instrumental, pretty much sets the tone. Too much experimentation, not enough rock n' roll.

The title track off "Eye Of The Zombie" isn't bad; it's a pretty good, dark little pop-rock song, and it made it to #3 on the Mainstream Rock List.
Actually most of the album isn't bad, it's just not good either (and it's probably no coincidence that none of the tracks off this record showed up on John Fogerty's late-90s world tour).

The other top ten-hit off "Eye Of The Zombie", the single "Change In The Weather", is quite simply dull. A repetitive melody, no real hooks, and that goes for most of the rest of the album as well, although "Knockin' At Your Door" and "Sail Away" are slightly better. But there is really nothing here to raise "Eye Of The Zombie" above mediocrity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Jan 21 2003
This review is from: Eye Of The Zombie (Audio CD)
I was surprised how good this release was. Fogerty touches on several styles here, including the bouncy 70's-style blues-rocker "Headlines" ala Bad Company. The pumping bassline is infectious. "Knockin' On Your Door" is pure 60's-style soul, spiced up by a punchy horn section. "Change in the Weather" is a sultry blues-rocker with a funky groove. (Another version of this tune can be found on Buddy Guy's FEELS LIKE RAIN cd, where he teams up with country-rocker Travis Tritt.)
Things start to slip a bit with "Violence is Golden", a scathing anti-war track. Although it has a biting chorus, the rest is oddly mellow & awkward. "Wasn't That a Woman" is just as trite as it sounds. Even worse is "Soda Pop", a complete waste of 5:53. "Sail Away" is a so-so finale.
Some may be put off by the opening instrumental, "Goin' Back Home". The track opens with a choir-like keyboard intro, followed by a slow, bluesy guitar toward the end. Personally, I like it.
