Book Description

April 13 2010 Theatre Illuminata (Book 1)
All her world’s a stage

Enter Stage Right

Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (Bertie): Our heroine.
Nate: A dashing pirate who will do anything to protect Bertie.
Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, and Peaseblossom: Four tiny, mischievous fairies, and Bertie’s loyal sidekicks.
Ariel: A seductive air spirit. Disaster follows in his wake, but Bertie simply cannot resist him.

Welcome to the Théâtre Illuminata, where the characters of every play ever written can be found behind the curtain. The actors are bound to the Théâtre by The Book, an ancient and magical tome of scripts. Bertie is not one of the actors, but they are her family. And she is about to lose them all because The Book has been threatened, and along with it the Théâtre. It’s the only home Bertie has ever known, and she has to find a way to save it. But first, there’s the small problem of two handsome men, both vying for her attention. The course of true love never did run smooth. . . .

Review

“Lisa Mantchev’s theatrical fantasy Eyes Like Stars pits a plucky orphan, Beatrice Shakespeare Smith, and her fairy attendants against the wiles of Ariel and a stuffy stage manager.”—New York Times Book Review

“All the world's truly a stage in Lisa Mantchev’s innovative tale, Eyes Like Stars. Magical stagecraft, unmanageable fairies, and a humourous cast of classical characters form the backdrop for this imaginative coming-of-age.”—Suzanne Collins

“With an iron-willed girl hero whose magic is with words, and a universe that is also the ultimate theater, Eyes Like Stars is the most unusual fantasy I’ve read this year! I recommend it to anyone who loves drama, strong girls, and rowdy faery folk!”—Tamora Pierce

“Electric . . . delicious . . . fascinating . . . vivid . . . smart and sassy . . . bawdy and hilarious . . . Brava! Encore!”—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

“Bertie’s determined efforts to become invaluable form the basic plot in this wildly imagined adventure . . . Mantchev clearly knows theater from all angles, and she uses inventive play-within-play formats to create a tumble of multiple, even metaphysical narratives filled with delicious banter and familiar characters from the dramatic canon. Many teens, particularly those with some theatrical background, will look forward to the sequel suggested at the end of this bravely flamboyant and wholly original romp.”—Booklist

“Mantchev’s first novel feels dreamlike . . . underneath is a solid story about the search for happiness and identity. Inside jokes will delight drama club devotees . . . but this passionate debut should attract a broader readership as well.”—Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Lisa Mantchev is the author of the Theatre Illuminata series, including Perchance to Dream and Eyes Like Stars. She grew up in the small Northern California town of Ukiah. She wrote her first play in the fourth grade, and has been involved in theater ever since. She received two scholarships to study drama at the University of California, Irvine. She won the Chancellor's Award For Undergraduate Research in Drama her senior year while studying in the Campuswide Honors Program. After graduation, she taught English at the Lycée Internationale de Los Angeles and created their Drama After School Program. In between report cards and drafting scripts for Winter and Spring productions, she wrote fiction.  Her first professional short fiction sale was in 2002, and her debut trilogy sold in 2007. Mantchev makes her home on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state with her husband Angel, her daughter Amélie and four hairy miscreant dogs. When not scribbling, she can be found on the beach, up a tree, making jam or repairing things with her trusty glue gun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic idea! May 15 2013
Format:Hardcover
What a unique book! I'm totally in love with everything about it; characters, setting, story, writing. I was not expecting that at all.
Bertie, our leading lady, grew up in what can only be described as a magical theatre. Every character from every play could potentially be on a days call sheet and have to show up from wherever they are when they're not in the theatre.
Bertie is a witty, smart, personable, trouble maker and I love her. Together with her four fairy best friends (they are the fairies from A Midsummer Night's Dream); who are hilarious and the best part of the book- roam the theatre getting into mischievous, socializing with the other players and visiting different sets.
Bertie has two love interests; Ariel an air spirit and her first real friend upon coming to the theatre (until a falling out). And Nate, a pirate. I love me a hot pirate, and Nate is no exception. Mmmm....
Bertie soon finds she's being asked to leave the theatre, the only home and family she's even known. But is given one last chance to prove why she should be allowed to stay. Of course nothing goes as planned and Bertie soon finds an even bigger problem standing in her way. One where the whole theatre and players could be lost forever.
Mantchev's writing is refreshing and different. With very witty dialogue and the fascinating Theatre Illuminata as the back drop there is no reason not to love this book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, poor execution Jan 31 2013

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this book as I thought it was an interesting concept, something different from vampires, fey, etc.

It was so difficult to get through the book, writing did not flow, execution of the concept was poor. There were some interesting parts, but not enough to rescue the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The fairies were my fav! Nov 7 2010
By Cassay
Format:Hardcover
What first drew me to this book was the beautiful artwork on the cover. I would walk into Chapters every other week and always pick up this book read the excerpt and book it back. Unfortunately at the time I didn't have any extra money to spend on books so I had to wait. But the wait was worth it. Lisa knows how to take "boring" Shakespeare and make it interesting. I would have preferred to read her versions in high school.
My likes:
- New twists on famous theatre characters
- Bertie is a strong female type who doesn't let any of the boys push her around
- I LOVE the fairies. They had the best dialogue throughout the book. They are always talking about cupcakes and other delicious treats. (I wanted to go buy a cupcake every time they talked about sweets) My favourite scene in the entire book is as follows:

Bertie snatched Moth from midair. "How do you feel? Any more free than usual?"
He paused to Reflect. "Yeah, but only because I'm not wearing underwear today."
Cobweb and Mustardseed backed away from him. "You're going commando?'
Moth nodded. "I forget to five Mrs. Edith my hamper this week."
"Aw, man! I want to go commando, too!" Cobweb said as he reached for his trouser buttons.
Page 191 - 192

I was in tears laughing so hard at this scene it is my favourite
- Nate - I love me some pirate, and perfect for Bertie
- Ariel - Though I think I like him more for his gracefulness and looks. Don't think he is the one for Bertie. He is for me
Dislikes:
- My only complaint is trying to understand how the Theatre work was confusing at first but Lisa explained it near the end.
Overall this is a great book for someone wanting to read something happier than vampires, ghosts and werewolves and loves classical theatre productions.
