I love the Eyewitness series books for travel. They are informative and worth reading before a trip.
My biggest criticism is the sheer weight of them. It makes them hard to throw in your bag and carry around with you.

Guidebook, yes, History book, no!

First the good news: The DK series of books always delivers above and beyond expectations. The same story remains true in the main, here.
It is a clean, robust no-frills production, with a substantial feel when it is in your hands. The pictures are alluring and crisp. There is nothing flimsy or cheap looking about any DK books. Plus it is packed to the gills with useful information on Spain, by regions. And since Spain is so interesting and so multi-faceted that just the many things to see and do can overwhelm one, is all the more reason for a guidebook to give some historical context by regions too.
And this gets me to the negative points about this book. It is a tourist manual -- pure and simple -- that tells you how to get around from here to there: no frills. It gives next to nothing about the history of the regions you are to visit while in Spain. That of course is left as an exercise for the reader (and traveler). With this book you will also need a good history of Spain as a complementary companion.
Ideally, it should at a minimum include minimal discussions of the key sights with historical information on the best things to see and visit and then give historical details on why they are important. Since I have been to Spain several times, this was not such a hindrance, but as I was trying to think of where within Spain to go next, to other undiscovered regions for instance, then this missing history hit me hard. I am now in search of a handy uncomplicated history of Spain by regions. Three Stars

Excellent! As a Spaniard, I find this book full of details, pictures, great finds, and good maps. Overall, will likely pick up one of these books every 5-10 years for updates- but generally one of the best travel books.
