4.0 out of 5 stars great book wrong country June 27 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought the book because I have another "Europe" & I think the layout is great & I love the coloured pictures. But, I was wanting a book that included Ukraine. Supposedly Ukraine is Eastern Europe, but everything up to Ukraine is included. VERY DISAPPOINTED!! Now I had to buy different BOOKS that are not anywhere near as good. :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and quite complete Sept. 17 2012
By Flyingscot - Published on Amazon.com
I love the Eyewitness series and I have quite a few from DK. This volume covers East and Central Europe and does a good job of a really difficult subject. Other guidebooks may offer more information, but this book "shows" the best of East Europe to visitors. I especially liked the chapters on Romania and Hungary.

That said, carrying this specific book on a tour of multiple countries is very handy. While other books will supply more detail about individual cities and countries, this is the only book I would carry with me on the trip. Guidebooks are HEAVY and to carry multiple books adds a lot of weight to my backpack. In my case, I read other books before I go on a trip and make notes in this guide for extra places that I want to see. That way, I only carry one book, and this is the one.

Only one complaint about the "Eyewitness" series: because of the number of high quality photographs, these books must be printed on heavier paper and there is no other way of producing the quality. I use this tome on the trip and others that are more detailed before and after the trip. I will stick with DK.

2.0 out of 5 stars Seriously abbreviated information on each covered country! April 18 2013
By Christine A. Cowell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've collected over 2 dozen DK guides over the years, and have always found them very useful and reliable. This one, however, is not at all useful because it includes so many countries that the info on each one is unworkably diluted. Two examples: The info on Lithuania does not cover the Hill of Crosses, a very popular destination outside of Vilnius, and the section on Riga, Latvia, does not cover the city's very renowned array of Art Nouveau architecture. In my opinion, this would have been far better broken up into 3 books: the Baltic States, former East Block countries such as Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, and the Balkan states/former Yugoslavia.

5.0 out of 5 stars DK Travel Guide - Eastern and Central Europe Nov. 14 2012
By Sally M Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been very pleased with all the books from DK Eyewitness. I will be travelling to Eastern Europe with my Grandaughter next Spring and will be ordering a copy for her to study before we go.

The books are so interesting that they are very readable even if you do not plan to visit the countries soon. they certainly make you want to travel soon.

I usually take the guide with me when travelling, unfortunately the only drawback is the size of the volume. Perhaps future editions could be divided in to two volumes.

Sincerely, Sally Miller

4.0 out of 5 stars What to do when you get there Oct. 11 2013
By B. Schaefer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
These DK guides were recommended to us by traveling friends who said they focus on what to see, where to go, what's interesting in a location when you get there. As opposed to listing hotels and restos, which you can pretty well sort out on your own. (Restos are usually decided upon at the last minute anyway and depend on where you are in a town when you get hungry.) This book was a great guide on our trip to Belgrade, Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb. My only quibbles with it were its weight - too much to carry with you during the day except in a backpack - and its small print in many places. But its coverage is very thorough, and lots of pictures to orient you.
