Product Description

Product Description

Designed to improve on the F-4 Phantom’s air combat performance, the Tomcat entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1974, replacing the F-4 Phantom II. The winning Grumman design reused the TF30 engines from the F-111B, though the Navy planned on replacing them with the F401-PW-400 engines then under development by Pratt and Whitney for the Navy. Though lighter than the F-111B, it was still the largest and heaviest U.S. fighter to ever fly from an aircraft carrier. The F-14 had its first kills on August 19, 1981, over the Gulf of Sidra and went on to serve in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom over Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The only F-14 loss in combat was when a crew was shot down over Iraq, the pilot rescued by Special Forces and the RIO held as a POW until the end of the war. This book tells the story of this fascinating aircraft which still serves in Iran’s Air Force today.

2.0 out of 5 stars Promises allot - bit short on the delivery, May 28 2010

Disappointing is my first and only thought. The title promises allot but the photographs and content do not match. A childs book. This is only the second disappointing book I've purchased from Amazon based on the title and the product description and details. Its physical size does not lead to much in-depth discussion on the tomcat and the photos are small and limited. You have, "did you know facts" and the actual content about this aircraft is so shallow. In Brief, buy something else if its history and more detailed discussion you require, and if its for a gift for a child - yip it will do the trick. Cannot recommend it for serious collectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tony has done it again!!, Aug 20 2010

As an avid F-14 Tomcat fan, I pretty much have every book going about this agile and somewhat famous aircraft. However, having read previous titles written by Mr Tony Holmes, I can honestly say that he has yet again failed to disappoint.

Many book titles featuring the supersonic jet do outline the aircraft's checkered history during it's design, test and implementing stages but Tony has done alot more to give the reader a greater understanding of why it has become so iconic. The small anotations on each page give snippets of issues and achievements that arose during the jets testing which may not have been covered previously and no part of the book is biased towards any squadrons, variant or the crews that flew and worked with it.

Although a much smaller book than I intially expected, Tony has clearly made the decision to keep it simple for possible younger readers who may have seen the jet in it's twilight years but were too young to understand it, and for those who, like me, have read all the books and seen the movies/videos and appreciate a simple read.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a love and appreciation for aircraft in general but more so to the fans out there who are devoted to the F-14 Tomcat and in my eyes, it is another symbol for keeping the memory of the Tomcat alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small book, but very well done, Dec 15 2010

Four stars because I wish the book was a bit bigger in size so the pictures could be appreciated more, but the pictures & research is through and historic. I'd recommend the book to any F-14 Tomcat fanatic - especially if you, like I, own IRIS's F-14 for Flight Simulator X/FSX.
