Product Description

Ingram

"This book is an episodic log of some of the more memorable of (the author's) nearly 10,000 hours aloft in peace and in war. It is also an attempt to define by example his belief in the phenomenon of luck-- that the pattern of anyone's fate is only partly contrived by the individual."--The New Yorker. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fate is key., Dec 27 2011
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It's both comical and insightful. The situations he finds himself in, how fate plays such an important role, and getting aviation tips along the way, is precious.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't know when to stop!, May 25 2011

Like many (all) others I found the book an eye-opener into the challenging early years of civil aviation. I appreciate authors who are adept at creating word pictures for readers, and Mr. Gann is certainly one of those. I want to mention, however, two things that detracted from the overall favourable impact of the book. First, there were more than a few times in the book where he over-described things. He seemed to have a bent for attaching an adjective to every noun and an adverb to every verb with the result that, for me, some anecdotes became bogged down in description. Second, was his occasional penchant for philosophizing. His introduction is the most notable, and worst, example. It was practically impenetrable to read and, in my view, served no useful purpose. His philosophical forays throughout the book were more readable, but I could have done without them. His writing would have been more effective if he had followed that age old adage to "keep it simple stupid".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, May 19 2011

Mr. Gann has a writing style that is very easy to connect with. His experience reaches back to when commercial flight was young and includes many amazing and hair raising adventures. He shares those experiences in this book. The book was recommended to me by a pilot friend so I immediately bought and read it. It is a page turner for sure.
