Amazon.ca Product Description

Bone conduction MP3 player that attaches easily to any swim goggle or snorkeling mask, U.S.A. and International Patents Pending

From Amazon.ca

Ideal for swimmers, triathletes, surfers, synchronized swimmers, and anyone else involved in general water activities, the Finis SwiMP3 1G waterproof MP3 player allows you to listen to music underwater. Unlike standard waterproof MP3 players--which transmit sound through the air or water and produce only a muffled noise when submerged--the SwiMP3 1G relies on your bones to conduct the sound. This direct transfer of sound vibrations from the cheekbone to the inner ear produces exceptional sound clarity, so you can listen to all of your favorite tunes while working out or taking a leisurely swim.

The SwiMP3 1G attaches to your swim goggles or snorkeling mask.
The SwiMP3 1G also shines from a music standpoint, with 1GB of memory and support for both MP3 and WMA files. Listeners have a basic selection of controls, including volume, shuffle, and resume, with an MP3 control panel built into the side panel. And when you're ready to swim, the player attaches easily to your swim goggle or snorkeling mask. Other details include a rechargeable battery that lasts for up to 8 hours per charge, a built-in USB plug that inserts directly into your computer (no cable required), and a lightweight housing that weighs only 2 ounces. Designed to hold approximately 240 songs, the SwiMP3 1G is compatible with Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP and Mac OS 9.x and 10.x.

Features:

  • Patented Bone-Conduction Technology: Directly vibrates the inner ear to create the highest quality of music underwater
  • New Sleek Design with Strap Clip: Allows unit to be attached easily to any swim goggle or snorkeling mask
  • Integrated MP3 Panel: Incorporates On/Off, Volume, Next/Previous Track, Pause, and Shuffle functions
  • 8-Hour Rechargeable Battery: Lithium-ion battery charges directly from a USB port for plenty of continuous high-fidelity music
  • Windows and MAC Compatible: Easily drag and drop any MP3 or WMA files directly on to the device
  • Expanded 1GB of Storage: Allows for approximately 240 songs to be stored

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By dennis b on Jan. 29 2011
I swam as a kid but never really swam laps in a pool until a bout 3 years ago when they built one right across from my office. I love swimming, its fantastic excersize and low impact on joints - my only beef, its extremely boring, spending an hour listening to yourself splash / breathe gets old pretty quick. When I first heard about a waterproof mp3 player I was a bit skeptical, but the more I read the more I really wanted to give it a try. I did alot of research online and this mp3 player seemed to get the best reviews. Ive been swimming with one for two weeks now and my pool workouts have absolutely exploded in terms of length and intensity. Before owning this product the most Ive ever swam in an olympic sized pool was 30 laps in about an hour. After using it for one week, and not swimming for months before - i swam 70 laps in under an hour. Needless to say, music has a huge motivational factor for me, and if you're this kind of person - even if youre not - I would highly, highly recomend this thing. Keep in mind - if you do purchase this, it seems to fly in the face of convention - but - you NEED to wear earplugs for this thing to work its best. There are no headphones with this unit - the pads rest on the back of your cheekbone just in front of your ear canal or just below your temple. It kind of sounds like a cheap AM radio above the water, but put your head underwater and be prepared to be amazed. With solid earplugs in its even better as all of the outside sounds around your are blocked off - all you can hear is sweet sweet music. Just as I couldnt imagine running or lifting weights without my mp3s - i couldnt imagine swimming without them either. Highly, highly, highly recomended!!

The 1G was alright.
I had a 2G as well - it was better.
Looking forward to getting the Neptune. Hoping the craftsmanship is better than the previous 2 that I owned.

The 1G had it's contacts rust real quick.
Good thing is that Finis provided fantastic customer support, and replaced it. I asked nicely, and they shipped me a 2G instead.
That one lasted maybe a month and then stopped working. So Finis replaced that unit with another 2G.

Ironically, 9 months later the 2G died. When I contacted them again, they told me my warranty was up as the 2G's warranty was only valid for as long as my original 1G's period.

So now I am out $150 and my SwiMP3.

I only wish these things were less money. If they were, I would buy one for each of my kids as well... but an MP3 player for the pool at $170 that doesn't last even a year is just a bit too much to pay to give to a child.

That all being said - my swims without the SwiMP3 is just not the same - I really miss it. I hate how my Sony waterproof mp3 player plugs my ears (rubber seal). It makes me feel uncomfortable. As if that seal breaks and water gets into my ear, I can't hear the music that well.

The beauty with this device is that it doesn't even cover your ears at all... it just rests in front of them on the side of your head. You hear the music SO WELL. I was skeptical until I tried it myself... and let me tell you, IT WORKS AMAZING.

So on to the Finis NEPTUNE underwater mp3 player I go... hoping this time it'll last longer.

(BTW - I rate this product as a 5 start "must have" for avid swimmers - but since I've gone through so many of them over the years, and none of them have lasted me a year, I cut the rating in half for poor product quality, but and crediting 1/2 star for good customer service... 3/5 stars overall. 1 more star if the product was made better, and 1 more star if the product was priced properly...)

I have been living in India for several years and recently joined a club that has a swimming pool. I have been doing 30 laps regularly but was quite envious when a friend of mine showed up with an underwater MP3 player. Unlike working out in the gym where you can listen to your favourite music, all I could listen to was the 'swish swish' of the water - not Akon for sure! I subsequently did a web search on underwater MP3s and found the reviews for this particular one very interesting, especially with the concept of 'hearing' the music through bone induction. So I purchased it from here and my son brought it over when he came from Toronto. Swimming is now very enjoyable indeed. The sound quality is exceptional when in the water, although my friend found it a little less so, mainly because she does breast stroke and therefore tends to 'bob' up and down which affects the sound quality. I found the quality to be excellent and it has brought an extra measure of pleasure to my swimming. Thanks.

It is a great product and wonderful idea behind it, but it is not designed very well... plastic part on one side that is supposed to hold goggles strap broke right away, and the cover for the usb plug in is not water proof at all and had some fragile plastic parts inside of it that broke...leakage caused the metal on usb to rust and now most of the metal is gone, there is no way for a pc to recognize the unit when plugged in...this is the only way to charge it as well. Got the same model 9 months later, and they did improve design on the cover for the usb, now it is all rubber, however the usb still gets wet. You really have to make sure to dry it off after every use.
