"First Encounter" provides an enchanting account of shtetl life as experienced by Bella and Marc Chagall as children and young lovers. It is refreshing to read about this slice of life from a different perspective than "Fiddler On The Roof" by Sholom Aleichem. Bella Chagall portrays the beauty of nature in a small rural village and the bustle of Jewish homes, where men lost themselves in study and women ran the businesses and the households. There is a wonderful chapter on going to the bath-house which creates a memorable picture of little girls with their mothers and grandmothers, giggling, gossiping and experiencing their natural cycles together. Another chapter about a sad, wealthy woman who buys a special string of pearls from a kind, discreetly sensitive jeweler, is unforgettable. I read the chapter on a sleigh ride through the village to my son's first-grade class at Hanukah/Christmas time, and the kids loved it. Anyone who enjoys the art of Marc Chagall and is interested in Jewish life in the shtetl would love this book.
