Good series, gets better as it progresses,

This review is from: Fablehaven Complete Set (Boxed Set) (Paperback)
Fablehaven is a new fantasy world based on the idea of a select group of humans serving as caretakers of magical creature preserves. Fablehaven is the name of one such preserve, and the stories revolve around Seth and Kendra, the grandchildren of the current caretakers. The stories are full of magical creatures that appear to be drawn in part from popular myths, from Dungeons & Dragons, and a few that are unique to the current series (e.g., blixes). As the series progresses, Seth and Kendra go from just learning about this new hidden world to become key parts in its war of good versus evil that threatens the entire planet. Mysterious enemies, plot twists, and lots of exciting adventures are the highlights of this series. For the most part, it's quite good. That said, I found the earlier books (especially Book 1) were clumsily or lazily written, with a lot of miraculous and/or unbelievable events happening just to force the plot along its laid-out tracks. In particular, Seth's character is reckless, and lucky, beyond reasonable belief. Fortunately, as the series progresses, the author seems to realize this and deals with it (at times, explicitly). That helped make the books much more enjoyable from an adult perspective (the kids I know who read it didn't mind these issues). There are a few illustrations in each book (4-5) that are full page, black and white. They generally help show a unique creature or place. They're nice, but too few in number to really affect one's enjoyment of the book.Overall then, this is really a 4.5/5 (I rounded down for a change). It's not quite Harry Potter or something I'd say I totally love, but it is fun, fresh, fantasy fiction that makes for good light reading for adults, and good, somewhat challenging reading for kids 8 and up. As the books build off each other and get better as the series progressed, the box set is really the way to go if you are thinking about reading/buying the series. The books are long enough (400-600 pages) for the box set to allow for a lot of good reading. So if you like fantasy fiction, or know an older child who does, I feel confident recommending this box set.
