Lame story, lamer dialog, but as a record of Canadian culture in the early 1970s, with its embarrassing haircuts, leisure suits, and stubby beer bottles, it has a certain interest. The only convincing drama is on the ice, with real teams playing staged and actual games in arenas gloriously free of advertising and flashing lights. Watch for Bobby Orr, Dave Keon, Gordie Howe, and a host of others -- even a glimpse of broadcasting legend Foster Hewitt. But these short scenes are separated by long episodes of syrupy romance and half-baked conflict between the hard-hitting rookie and the neurotic hippie folksinger. We never do get much of an idea why these two people "dig" one another.

The disk includes a commentary track by the two stars and some other guy, none of whom can remember much about the movie. The other feature is an SCTV spoof starring John Candy as the hockey player; you have to wonder why they bothered.

I have written elsewhere that this should've been made into DVD form! Ahh, but at last, it has been! Bravo and well done, VSC! Looooooonnng overdue! Also, the SCTV parody of the film has been added! A classic in its own right! Two classics on one disc! You can't lose, unless you pass this deal over! We Canadians never used to be proud of our classic films as compared to our American cousins. Well, now we've done it! Well worth what you pay. Art Hindle and Trudy Young are wonderful as the loving young couple. Really strong performances by John Vernon, Austin Willis, Vivian Reis and George Armstrong knock it outta the park!

Fans of hockey and admirers of 1970s cinema will love this flick! A unique Canadian film, filled to the brim with unbeleivable live hockey footage that shows some of the sport's most talented players on the ice!

Was much better when I saw it when I was 8 years old. Oct. 3 2012

Ok, I will state first what I liked about the movie. First, had some great old footage (especially the front of the "The Olympia" there in Detroit! What memories!), and reminiscing about everything in the late 60's & early 70's (ads, product placement, cars, parts of Toronto) that puts someone who grew up in that era and in that region of the US/Canada into memory lane. Secondly, some of the hockey stars in it (George Armstrong for one . .Way to go Chief!) make it really fun to watch.
Ok, now for the bad . .the movie's plot is a bit weak, and the girlfriend character of the "hockey hero" is a bit on the annoying side. Acting is a bit on the "mechanical" side, but I have seen FAR worse movies than this. Nevertheless, this movie holds a sentimental side to it for me, as I was 8 yrs old when my Dad took me to go see it. But when I watched it again 40 yrs later, didnt have the same appeal to me, so for someone in the modern-day trying to absorb it, they'll probably be bored to death by it.

If you can get it at a decent price, and if the movie holds some sort of sentiment behind it, then I'd say it is a good purchase. However, anything outside those two caveats and you maybe disappointed.
Glorious Hockey Comedy! Aug. 6 2014

I saw this at my buddy's house (in Canada), his whole family was watching it when I walked in. Couldn't stop watching.

The Hockey footage looks classic and crisp. The rest is hilarious.

This is like a Campy/Canadian version of SLAPSHOT.

Whoever put this out deserves a pat on the back.
