Product Description

Album Description

Something a little creepier than this would have made for a more intriguing and fitting listen. The Falcon Lake Incident is, after all, named for a 1967 UFO sighting in Manitoba (and it's also where Jim Bryson and The Weakerthans convened to record). Instead, we get typically pleasant and reliable Bryson folk songs, save a crashing, clattering closing track. Make no mistake: this is definitely more a Bryson album than a 50/50 collaboration. His voice and acoustic guitar are always at the forefront. It's not until halfway in that we get something that instrumentally resembles the Weakerthans' canon. Like Old Man Luedecke, Bryson is at his best when he's singing about people getting together: New Year's Eve revelers on "Anything And All," a couple sleeping under the stars in "Constellation," a family reunion for "Kissing Cousins." These aren't the sort of songs you should listen to alone; they're meant for times of interaction. It's surprising how warm and inviting The Falcon Lake Incident is, considering it was turned out by five dudes in a cabin in minus 30 degree Celsius temperatures. It's a tame affair, but earworms like the mutating chorus of "Metal Girls" will keep you coming back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jim Bryson, Ottawa represent!, Feb 13 2012
This review is from: Falcon Lake Incident (Audio CD)
Just for clarification, with the two other reviews I've read. This is a Jim Bryson album, that uses the Weakerthans as a backing band and not the other way around. These songs are written by Jim Bryson, who is a awesome musician from Ottawa, Canada. He's also in the touring band for Kathleen Edwards (Alt-Country artist from Ottawa).

Anyway, this is my favorite Jim Bryson album. I actually just saw him in concert this past weekend, doing a mostly acoustic set, alone with his guitar. Great songwriter and amazing guitar player too. Anyway, if you like Alt-country or the Weakerthans, I highly recommend this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent blending, Oct 19 2010
By David B. Haskin - Published on Amazon.com
The Weakerthans are another in a long list of Canadian indie acts that don't get their just due in the U.S. For this album, they replace the vocals of frontman John Samson with another unjustly unheralded Canadian act, singer/songwriter Jim Bryson (although Samson is still very much a part of this album). I loved Samson's high, urgent voice, but Bryson gives this album a quieter tone without taking away the urgency that has long been part of the Weakerthans music. The songs are all strong -- not a throwaway among 'em. This will get serious consideration on my Ten Best list for the year.

4.0 out of 5 stars what is fart?, Dec 9 2010
By fartbutter - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Falcon Lake Incident (Audio CD)
I think this is a very good album that resembles a typical weakerthans albums in a lot of ways. At first i found myself wondering why John Sampson wasn't singing but once I got over that I enjoyed the album very much.
