Book Description

Mar 6 2006
Walter Stadnick is not an imposing man. At five-foot-four, his face and arms scarred by fire in a motorcycle accident, he would not spring to mind as a leader of Canada's most notorious biker gang, the Hells Angels. yet through sheer guts and determination, intelligence and luck, this Hamilton-born youth who had the nickname of "Nurget" rose in the Hells Angels ranks to become national president. Not only did he lead the Angels through the violent war with their rivals the rock machine in Montreal in the Nineties, Stadnick saw opportunity to grow the Hells Angels into a national criminal gang. he was a visionary--and a highly successful one.

Bikers are not known for their fondness for rival gangs. Stadnick and the Angels fought and defeated rival gangs, or used power of persuasion to patch them over. As Stadnick's influence spread, law enforcement took notice of the growing presence of the Angels in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. However, Stadnick's success did not come without a price. Arrested and charged with 13 counts of first-degree murder, stadnick beat the murder charges but was convicted of gangsterism and is currently serving time.

Fallen Angel details one man's improbable rise to power in one of the world's most violent organizations, while shedding light on how this enigmatic and dangerous biker gang operated and why it remains so powerful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! April 10 2006

I'm a fan of the true crime genre, bikers in particular, and this one was totally worth picking up. Langton has a really great narrative style and effortlessly brings the reader along on this guy's rise to fame. You come away with a real appreciation for Stadnick in many ways. I couldn't put it down all last weekend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book April 8 2006
Format:Paperback
I remember when the Quebec Biker wars broke out. There was plenty of violence, but little information. Bombs went off, guns were fired, and others disappeared. It seemed like Quebec was going to descend into total chaos; and the only details we had were that biker gangs were involved.

Then out comes this book 'Fallen Angel'. Somehow this guy managed to get lengthy interviews with people who have not been interviewed before. So many questions are answered.

But there's more here than just an amazing amount of detail. Sometimes the book takes you up close, and you see how the events of the time were influenced by the strategies and personalities of a few people. Sometimes the book takes you far above the battle, so you can see the big picture.

Also, the quality of the writing is high. When you're reading a book about bikers or gang warfare, it helps to have a writer who knows how to tell a story with dark humour. And this book has plenty of that.
