The only life Jahnel had ever known was under the surface of the asteroid inhabited by the alien Avelle. Tumbling and gliding in the low-gravity fallways was second nature to her. So was withdrawing behind her cape when an Avelle approached - lest the alien's attack reflex be triggered. And so was unquestioning obedience when her Avelle benefactors sent her into battle against alien intruders.
But then Jahnel discovered what the Avelle had neglected to tell their adopted warriors: The enemey was human! Suddently she had a choice to make: forever turn her back on her human heritage, or accept "rescue" and leave behind everything she knew and loved... or rebel against Avelle and human alike - and dare to forge a new life for them all!

Ms. Downing seems to excel at creating great characters and then drawing them (and you) through an intense plot. I'm a David Weber/Isaac Asimov/Robert Heinlen fan and I really think this book is on par with them.

Downing has created an alien society so "alien" to our own,
whereby the aliens have their own value system to which the
stranded humans must adapt. (Her book "Rinn's Star" is
equally fascinating.) In addition, she develops the
characters so that the readers become attached to them.
She also manages to have female protaganists, somewhat rare
for hard science fiction. As a fan of the old 1950's
writers (where the best sci-fi was written), I feel she comes
closer to them than most contemporary writers. Unfortunately
the publishing company did little to get the word out.
