Excellent quality show--poor DVD treatment., Nov 6 2005
This review is from: Fame: The Complete First Season (DVD)
The first season of the TV show "Fame," holds up suprisingly well over 23 years after its intial appearance on TV. It doesn't appear so much as dated as nostolgic. The picture quality and sound quality are very good on the DVD. The first season of "Fame," remains quite faithful to the 1980 movie that inspired it, particulary given the constraints of network TV circa 1982. The first two seasons of the show--its time on NBC--were its best. For its susequent seasons from 1983-84 to 1986-87, it ran in first-run syndication. These episodes were video taped rather than filmed so the show appeared to look cheap and the stories grew corny.
All that being said, I have some criticisms of the treatment the show got on this DVD said. As mentioned above the picture and sound quality on the DVD are very good, however:
1) Unlike the DVD release of the 1980 movie a few years ago, we do NOT have the ability to go straight to the musical numbers if we want to specifically listen to the songs.
2) The DVD subtitles do not subtitle the lyrics of the songs--one has to use the closed captioning for hearing impaired (as on conventional TV) in order to follow the words of the songs.
3) There are absolutely no extras on the DVD set.
4) The episode listings on the DVD disc itself and the cases are labelled incorrectlty. For example, it lists the first DVD as having episode 1 to 5 when it only has the 1st 4 episodes.
5) This point is a bit nit-picky, the cast photo on the back of the DVD box is from the 2nd season--not the first.
I give this DVD 4 stars only because of the quality of the show itself.
Lastly, it is sad and bittersweet to watch Gene Anthony Ray who portrayed Leroy, given the fact that he died a couple of years ago at a relatively young age.
I hope they release the 2nd season to DVD as well. I would buy it--but I wouldn't buy any of the subsequent seasons.

FAME - It's gonna live Forever!, Nov 5 2005
This review is from: Fame: The Complete First Season (DVD)
Despite some labling problems and lack of "extras" this 4 disc series is just as fresh as when it first aired. The material is obviously dated in references to the pop culture of the past. However, these references only add to the charm and take the veiwer back to "the day" prior to discmans, MP3 players, DVD's and the "net".
The veiwing quality is good and all the song and dance numbers are there with the exception of one episode which has been "musically altered". The episode in question is one of only two episodes in TV's FAME history that does not feature at least one vocal number. I did not catch or notice the "editing".
If you loved the show during it's original airing, you'll love it now. If FAME is new to you, it is well worth the price of "Admission".
"You Want FAME? Well FAME costs - and right here is where you" can buy and enjoy it!"

Ahh... The Good Ole Days, Nov 7 2005
This review is from: Fame: The Complete First Season (DVD)
What can I say? This was one of my all time favourite tv shows when I was in high school. My friends and I faithfully watched every episode. It made you wish you were one of those kids or that your school was as cool as theirs. It was very nostolgic to see all of these great episodes again. The scary thing is that I remember every word of every song that they sing!
