Product Description

From Library Journal

First issued in 1994, Family Circle Easy Knitting Magazine has featured a variety of interesting afghan designs. This book gathers patterns from past issues, making them available to libraries that may not subscribe to the magazine. The 50 patterns include a wide variety of designs and techniques. Patterns are nicely laid out, with a materials list, gauge information, a stitch glossary, instructions, and a full-color, full-page photo of each design. Many of the designs specify yarns readily available and easier on the pocketbook than some of the specialty yarns. The selection of baby quilts is particularly colorful. The only quibble with this book is the skill levels assigned to patterns. Many of the patterns marked "intermediate" could well be termed "advanced," and some of the beginner designs are definitely intermediate. Through some editorial mix-up, the crochet patterns are ranked as for "beginning knitters" or "intermediate knitters." Nevertheless, for its wealth and variety of fetching designs, this title is highly recommended for public libraries.

From Booklist

Easy is a relative term, even though the levels of difficulty assigned to each of these 50 ready-to-stitch patterns are somewhat questionable. "Cable comforts," a unicolored cable-knit blanket, is marked for beginners, but it should probably be designated as intermediate. Yet there's no problem either with the levels assigned to the afghan design or with the quality of the instructions; who could argue with traditional granny squares, Native American motifs, or cute-as-a-button textured lamb baby blankets? An appeal guaranteed to win over any taste, any stitching experience, and any age. Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific terrific book! Gorgeous and practical projects!, Jan 24 2002
By A Customer
I've been knitting for about a decade and have dozens of knitting books. This is the best all-around pattern book I've seen. The afghans are BEAUTIFUL - just beautiful! I'd like to make each and every one. The instructions are clear; there are patterns clearly marked for all skill levels. There are knitted projects and crocheted projects. There are afghans made in pieces and afghans made as a whole. And best of all, the recommendations for yarn are not just for $11 a skein peruvian virgin alpaca that you can only buy in a yarn specialty shop - there are yarn recommendations for $3 a skein yarns you can buy in any craft store. This is a well-organized, beautifully presented and worthy addition to any knitter's or crocheter's library.

3.0 out of 5 stars tip for owners of this book, Nov 25 2003

I haven't read it, but I've seen it and it looks like a good book. I'm writing this review to pass on this info to anyone who might be able to use it. The following is something I picked up from someone else:

Liked the variety of selections in this book. Can't give it an outstanding because my copy has at least one erratum. After an email to Family Circle I received this correction for page 30 "Portable Throw [for] beginner knitters". 3/4 of the way down the left hand column and under "Stitches -- Chevron and Feather" you will find ROW 1 of the Pattern. It reads:"Row 1(RS)*K1,yo, W"<====this "W" should be replaced by "k4" and then continue on. In my opinion this pattern is better for intermediate knitters, it contains 'lace' stitches. However, if you can master yo's (yarn over's) and K2tog's (knit two together's) you can knit this lovely afghan very quickly. Also wrong: crochet afghans (2nd half of bk)are listed for "knitters" levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Knitters, Dec 22 2006
By RoeDudster - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Family Circle Easy Afghans: 50 Knit and Crochet Projects (Paperback)
I have checked this book out from the library so many times that I've finally ordered a copy from Amazon.

There are 34 knitting patterns and 16 crochet patterns. I can only address the knitting patters as I know nothing about crochet. The knitting patterns are for either beginner's or intermediate; the biggest decision is which afghan you'll want to make first.

The pattern's were first published in Family Circle Magazie between 1997 and 2001. All of the patterns are very contemporary and use a variety of different yarn types - Lion Brand, Patons, Plymouth, Red Heart, Crystal Palace, Mission Falls, etc.

I have been on an afghan kick, looking at many knitting books with afghan patterns. This book is one of the best!
