Book Description

A Safe, Natural, and Effective Alternative Medicine

Millions of people, including health professionals, are mining to homeopathy, a form of medicine that treats illness by stimulating the body's natural defenses. Dr. Lockie explains how homeopathy can help restore health, rather than simply fight disease.

This family reference guide provides all the information necessary to understand how homeopathy works, and how any individual can use it simply and safely to treat a wide variety of illnesses. Accessibly organized by symptoms affecting all parts of the body from head to toe, The Family Guide to Homeopathy offers a list of remedies for hundreds of conditions along with details on how often and how long to give the remedy. It covers everything from heart disease to menopause, from allergies to ulcers, including advice on when to consult a doctor. Special sections feature symptoms and solutions for special problems affecting men, women, infants, and the elderly.

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Lockie, a well-known homeopath in the U.K., argues that at its deepest level, homeopathy is preventive in nature, gently nudging the immune system to work better. And although he concedes that drugs, surgery, radiation and other high-tech methods have been successful for some disorders, Lockie claims they are not appropriate for the majority of diseases seen in family practice. Homeopathic treatment, as he describes it, involves a peeling away of "layers" of illness, removing symptoms in the reverse order in which they appeared, and each time reaching further back. Because homeopathic medicine looks on the mind and body as one, Lockie argues that remedies should match three elements: physical symptoms, mental and emotional symptoms, and the general sensitivities of the patient. Unfortunately, this comprehensive look at homeopathic treatments is not altogether user-friendly, especially for those who have not yet been evaluated by a homeopath and do not know if their condition is well suited to this treatment system. Appendices include an extensive listing of how 60 substances used in homeopathic remedies are intended to work and a bibliography. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal

Unlike allopathic medicine, homeopathy has a long tradition of encouraging self-diagnosis and self-care where reasonable. Here, a British homeopath offers a very accessible explanation of homeopathic theory, a homeopathic first-aid guide, a compilation of numerous ailments and symptoms and their corresponding treatments, and one of the better materia medica aimed specifically for home use by the layperson. The text has been "Americanized" for U.S. readers. Lockie is careful to point out symptoms that require medical intervention. His book is highly recommended for public libraries with subject demand in alternative health modalities.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Family Guide to Homeopathy March 17 2012
By junick
This is an excellent book on homeopathy. Especially useful to the parents of young children, who spring a fever or ear infection, or any other ailment and you can't get to the homeopath. The guide inside is very helpful in finding the right remedy. No guessing what remedy to use. It lists every ailment, and the possible symptoms, and remedies to use. Also love that it has a list of the constitutional types in the back of the book, also it gives a list of the basic remedies that you should have on hand. Seriously the most concise and well done book on the subject for the family. If you are searching for one book, this is it! You will find yourself using this book time and time again!

4.0 out of 5 stars this is the book to have, but... April 2 2003
this is the only book to have for an immature homeopath. but, it is very disorganized. it is very difficult to find a specific ailment in this book. sometimes you have to read a chapter or two to find what you are looking for. also, Dr. Lockie in this book talks about many ailments that he does not suggests any remedies for. it just feels like waisting my time to finally find it, read a page on the ailment, and not even get any use from it. the only great thing that i find about this book, is that it shows you how to pick the right medicine without guesswork and abra-cadabra that i found so many homeopaths use.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great intro to a worthy allopathic alternative Nov. 24 2000
I received this book from a friend almost five years ago, and I continue to refer to it again and again. This is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in homeopathy, from the beginner looking for a proven alternative to allopathic medicine, to the more advanced homeopath who needs a good reference. This edition covers a myriad of ailments and gives clear, easy to understand explainations of the homeopathic remedies presented here. Highly recommended to those of you looking for a great homeopathic reference guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for those new to homeopathy June 26 2000
By A Customer
This is the only book on homeopathy that I own, and I'm extremely pleased with it. I purchased this book at a health food store, and it has provided me with a very comprehensive introduction to homeopathy. I am bothered by hay fever and chronic sinus problems, and some of the remedies recommended in this book have proven very beneficial to me.
The author prescribes remedies for pretty much every health condition I could think of. In the appendix he provides descriptions of some of the more commonly presribed homeopathic remedies to give the reader a better sense of the remedies' uses. However, this appendix does not provide descriptions of some of the less commonly prescribed remedies, and I found this frustrating. In my case, I found a remedy called Sanguinaria recommended for two health conditions that bother me. I wanted to know more about this remedy, but the author doesn't provide a description of Sanguinaria in his appendix. Without such a description, it's impossible for me to determine whether the remedy is really right for my constitutional makeup--a concept that is supposedly important in this field of medicine. In all fairness to the author, I haven't found any other books on homeopathy that provide descriptions of these less common remedies either. Still, for the layperson, it is a bit frustrating.
