4.0 out of 5 stars A great reference!, Dec 5 2003

This review is from: Famous Black Quotations (Paperback)
FAMOUS BLACK QUOTATIONS is a great resource to just about anyone, whether they are a student doing research, a presenter seeking to add some historical content or anyone looking for additional knowledge! It includes quotations from well-known persons such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sojourner Truth, but it also provides quotes from lesser-known persons as well. These topics include love, struggle, self-reliance and making discoveries, just to name a few! One of my personal quotations hails from August Wilson. It reads, "All you need in the world is love and laughter. That's all anybody needs. To have love in one hand and laughter in the other." When one reflects on this quote, its truth seems to jump off the pages!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book, Aug 22 2000

This review is from: Famous Black Quotations (Paperback)
I spotted this one at my local book store and couldn't put it down. This compact volume is an invaluable resource for students, writers, or everyday folk. It includes both extremely well-known and obscure quotes and conrtibutors.

I was surprised to read that many familiar quotes that I'd been aware of for years are actually attributed to African Americans. This book would make a great gift for the recent grad or any of the wordsmiths in your life. The only drawback is the book's brevity I only wish it were more comprehensive!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive collection of famous quotations, Jan 7 1999
This review is from: Famous Black Quotations (Paperback)
I am a writer, and this book has saved me on many an occasion. The quotations included cover a broad spectrum of categories- struggle, identity, self-reliance, challenge, love, etc.- and eras. Handy size makes it ideal for carrying. The only thing I don't like is that the quotations are accompanied by a name only. While it is easy to identify names like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, others are more obscure and because I am not entirely familiar with African-American history, it leads me to wonder who some of these people are. Otherwise, a great reference tool and kudos to Ms. Bell for putting together such a handy book!
