Its good for what it is.,
By Mike (Here and There) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Famous Monsters (Audio CD)
In 1999, when this CD was released, I would have told you to get the CD immediately. I listened to it every day and screamed out the lyrics at the top of my lungs. It was killing time every day! Now, I'm five years older and so is this CD. My taste in food has gone from McDonalds to finer dining. My taste in music has changed from pop metal to music that has substance, meaning, and relevance to music. While this is a rather fun CD to listen to, its not going to be a definition of what the Misfits should be, or will be, rememberd as: the pioneers of punk which inspired a generation of punks and metalheads alike. Don't get me wrong, I can probably still sing along with songs like "Crawling Eye" or "Scream." Heck, I'll even give props to Doyle for finally showcasing some guitar solos off in this album. Its just that with its production value and lyrical content, it is a very cartoonish version of what the Misfits were from 1977-1983, when there was a very disturbing, violent tone to their sound. (On the other hand, the new Danzig releases are a parody of what he did up to 1995.) A lot changes in five years. Heck, even this band has. As I write this review, every member, save Jerry Only, has left the group. Doyle stopped performing, Dr. Chud started a band called X-Ward, and Michale Graves is now a Conservative activist for the forum Conservative Punk (which, by the way, I personally find contradictory). Change is a necessary function in life. But while its nice to be selective in your tastes, there's nothing wrong with having a little McDonalds here and there.

Horror Hotel,
This review is from: Famous Monsters (Audio CD)
Just the morose and elegaic song "Descending Angel" is well worth the price of the CD but as a bonus we get to hear some other styles which the Misfits fine tune. Ranging from hardcore punk to blues, to metal, each song stands on its own, there is not one stinker in the bunch. Favorites are "Scream", "Them", "Crawling Eye", "Forbidden Zone", "Lost in Space" and the magnum opus "Helena". So what if all the "true" Misfits fans disapprove of this, this is just intended for entertainment, its not 1980 anymore, so don't expect the Misfits to stay frozen in time and keep playing "Walk Amongst" stuff. Grow up.
