Product Description

Special expanded edition of their 2009 album includes six extra tracks. Founded by frontwoman Emily Haines (beloved by critics for her work as part of Broken Social Scene) and guitarist Jimmy Shaw, the group self-financed the recording of Fantasies and set up their own global label operation. Formed in Toronto but, at various times, based in Montreal, London, New York and L.A., Metric boasts the sort of history that requires one of those connect-the-dots redlined maps you see in an Indiana Jones movie - and the story of Fantasies is no different. Produced by Gavin Brown (The Tea Party, Billy Talent), co-produced by Metric guitarist Jimmy Shaw, and mixed by Grammy award winning collaborator John O'Mahony (Coldplay, The Strokes). 16 tracks.

I can't wait to get my hands on this CD! Currently, it has been released in advance on iTunes, and all the tracks can be heard on the band's website. It is of such quality that I hope fans new and old alike will make a point of paying for this gem.

Their last release was in 2005, the sharp and rockin' Live It Out. It represented another versatile extreme for the band; Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? was indie brilliance in a time when indie to me strove to be so different and experimental, it rendered things haphazardly listless and largely un-listenable. That catchy effort was mostly synth driven.

With Live It Out, the sound expertly slipped from loud to soft, and it was punch in the face--in a good way. I must admit it took a while for me to get used to the sudden shift, but afterward, I liked it even better. That album was guitar-driven, and Haines, crooning in one track and confrontational and edgy in another, supported her range with her sharp-as-knives wit and lyrics; it was a sound that demanded attention, grabbing you by the shoulders and given it a brain-addling shake--"Empty," a song I still find exhilarating, could not be a better example.

Grow Up and Blow Away, a re-release of the band's first album, was lovely in its innocence and sweet pop melodies, and exuded honesty and playful commentary. Another completely different sound, executed very well by Metric; they are a chameleon group that shows it can exist in many spaces, and also elevate it--because when I say "sweet pop melodies," I certainly don't mean it in the shallow, soulless, repetitive, and over-produced stuff that commonly fill radio airwaves without end.

And now, we come to Fantasies.

I am a recent fan of Metric and purchased this album a couple of weeks ago. It is one of those rare albums you can put in your player and listen to from beginning to end. All of the songs are really good and they come together as a cohesive set.

It might be helpful if somebody actually described what is on Disc 2 of this "limited edition" British import of Fantasies. Because it is not in Amazon's product description or in any reviews that I can see. Here is the Disc 2 tracklist of the product being sold here:
1. Waves
2. The Gates
3. Help I'm Alive (acoustic)
4. Gimme Sympathy (acoustic)
5. Sick Muse (acoustic)
6. Sick Muse (Adam Freeland Remix)
7. Gimme Sympathy (Adam Freeland Remix)
8. Help I'm Alive (Twelves Remix)
9. Nobody Home
10. Sugar Mountain
11. Video: The Making of Fantasies (8 1/2 minute excerpt from the documentary The Rawside of Metric, in PAL format)

There is another "limited edition" of this CD on the market which advertises the songs Eclipse (All Yours) and Black Sheep. Note that this is NOT that CD. This somewhat limits its appeal. It does have the 2 B-sides, tracks 1 and 2, as well as Jimmy Shaw doing acoustic versions of songs by Pink Floyd (track 9) & Neil Young (track 10). The acoustic versions of the Fantasies songs are very good in themselves and nice to have; the remixes not so much. Acoustic Metric is still Metric, sometimes even Metric enhanced; remixed Metric really waters down the Metric content and is mainly about the remixer. Not so interesting, so far as I'm concerned. Basically this is a product for hard-core Metric fans only.

I used to like Metric but I never really listened to any of their albums end-to-end. This album is a little bit more restrained and polished than previous overtures and the result is a fantastic album. I can't stop listening to this. It's in the same realm as a good U2 album, honestly.

I was hooked on Metric when I heard the opening track, Help Im Alive. There is not a bad song on this album. I can listen to this album over and over again. The guitar and lyrics in sick muse, and the piano in Blindness are phenomenal. Gimme Sympathy and satellite mind are Metric at its best. I have heard other songs from Metric (monster Hospital) in the past and I thought were great, but this Album just blows my mind and all of other material from them. This album is a defining moment of the 2000's where music has been so inconsistent.

The Cars meets Moby meets Bowie. Excellent album, every single song is strong. I've always had a weakness for artistic melancholy. Highly recommended, ultra talented canadian band.
