The visually ravishing animated movie The Fantastic Mr. Fox follows a fox, voiced by George Clooney and dressed in a natty brown corduroy suit, as he cheerfully and recklessly takes his thieving ways a little too far and brings down the wrath of some sour-faced poultry farmers on his family and friends. Based on a lesser-known book by children's author Roald Dahl (who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach), the movie is the work of Wes Anderson (writer-director of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums), who expanded and elaborated on the original story; the combination is inspired. Anderson's sensibility--his fondness for meticulous compositions, coordinated colors, and narrative filigree--can sometimes seem finicky and stiff in live-action movies, but it's exquisitely suited to the painstaking art of stop-motion animation. Every corner of the screen crackles with visual invention and whimsical humor. The top-notch vocal cast (which also features Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Michael Gambon, Owen Wilson, and others) create vivid personalities that perfectly mesh with the movie's lush colors and luscious textures. The Fantastic Mr. Fox is an off-beat gem, a giddy mix of adult emotional issues, wild animal behavior, and childlike delight. --Bret Fetzer

Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of the few animated features that is hilariously great entertainment for kids, and absolutely engaging entertainment for adults. From the animation to the story to the direction (by Wes Anderson) to the acting of the voice-over stars, Fantastic Mr. Fox ranks with the likes of Toy Story or the Wallace & Gromit films as robustly entertaining for movie lovers of all ages. George Clooney lends his voice and talents to the character of Mr. Fox, who's recently retired from his long, successful career of stealing poultry to become a journalist. His wife (Meryl Streep) is pregnant, and his son, Ash (the Anderson staple Jason Schwartzman), and nephew, the golden-boy Kristofferson (Eric Anderson), have a low-level rivalry that feels all too human. The story, based on the Roald Dahl tale, is slim, involving the return, just one more time, of Mr. Fox to his old profession--and the repercussions that may befall his pals from the mean farmers as a result. But the true charms of Fantastic Mr. Fox are in the smart dialogue, in the immersive animation that keeps the characters' faces just as expressive as humans', and in the very believable family and friend dynamics we can all relate to. When Clooney's Fox and Bill Murray's Badger get into "cussin'" matches, you can't help but crack up. Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of the all-time best films for the whole family. --A.T. Hurley

Utterly odd and unique in the best way. Sweet, funny, breezy stop motion animation film based on the Roald Dahl novel. It’s always delightful,
and very well voice-acted by the likes of George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Michael Gambon.

A fox/father decides to settle down, stop stealing chickens and become a respectable newspaperman, but hitting a mid life crisis the part of
him that longs to steal birds can’t be denied one last big heist, which leads to ever more dire (and funnier) consequences.

I liked the film on first viewing, but found I loved it on the second. First, for film fans, or fans of Anderson’s work, it’s hysterical how he has
translated his personal style, both visual and character, to animation. This looks and feels like his other films in a way that is by itself an absolute
crack-up. But more important it turns out that Anderson and Dahl are a great mix, with Dahl’s great imagination taking Anderson’s cock-eyed
view of life, and expanding it to a broader canvas. In the end, while populated by puppet animals, this is as human, touching and funny as almost
anything Anderson has done. It may be too sophisticated for little kids, but any child advanced enough to enjoy Dahl’s books (Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory, etc.) should have a grand old time, along with their parents.

Rented it for my kids.........bought it for myself because it is one of the few movies I will watch over and over again........with or without my kids! We love this movie. It's intelligent humour is what's so appealing. It's like MASH in animation. Certainly was surprised with this one!

I really enjoyed this movie because both George Clooney and Meryl Streep gave great performances.
I feel the dialogue is way above children and there is a moral to the story. It was funny in areas but sad at the same time. To see the reviews and more detailed information on this movie, go to IMDb.com

The Film 4.5/5

Wes Anderson's films are traditionally quirky and full of complex themes, and his adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox is no different. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's animated (stop motion); this material is not targeted at children.

When we join the story, Mrs. Fox (Streep) is telling Mr. Fox (Clooney) that she's pregnant. The two proceed to rob a chicken farm and narrowly escape capture. Mrs. Fox makes him promise to look for other work now that they are about to become parents. Mr. Fox agrees and finds a job writing a newspaper column.

Mr. Fox settles down in his new life, but always regrets giving up his old ways. He's also tired of living in a hole in the ground and wants a better home for his family. He goes to see Badger (Murray), who advises him about properties for sale in the area. Fox wants a house near three local farms, but Badger suggests that the neighborhood is too dangerous.

I truly cannot comprehend the appeal of this film and reluctantly have to accept that I am in the minority who did not like it at all. This film is just so unfunny and its association with Roald Dahl's book is tenuous at best. It tries so hard to be clever, but it fails on all accounts. I've heard better humour from 5yr olds, and the whole "cuss" thing got right up my nose. If using names such as George Clooney for the voiceovers is supposed to give it more credibility, then it fails miserably as it makes the film even more distracting, associating a name with an animated character. Any underlying themes or messages that this film is supposed to portray are lost as you just cannot warm to any of the characters. This is not clever script writing, this is utter drivel. I've been more entertained opening my 5th pair of socks to go with my 5th box of handkerchiefs at Christmas. This bluray will have the dubious honour of meeting its demise in the microwave; I understand they explode in pretty spectacular fashion, a fitting end to the worst stop animated dross I have ever wasted 80 minutes watching. I feel really sorry for children who watch this; they will have far more pleasure playing with the packaging it came in. If this film represents some sort of yardstick for a new type of humour only appreciated by pseudo intellectuals, then call me Mr. Thicky. This is no more than a modern day version of The Emperor's New Clothes, where if you don't like it, there's something wrong with you and you've missed the point. All I can say is bring back Wallace and Gromit; now they're clever and funny with it.
