This series of chapter packs continues the same distribution method began with the Brotherhood Without Banners series of chapter packs; each chapter pack contains 3 copies each of 20 cards.
This set introduces the basics of the Maester decks that will be the theme of this series. It comes with the Agenda card that allows you to put your maester links on your characters as you win challenges. It contains a critical new plot that allows you to bring a maester into play early.
It also has other really useful stuff. The Laughing Storm is a new card designed by the 2010 world champion (this is a regular occurrence, and is one of the rewards for being a world champion). The card is so strong that it has already been placed on the restricted list.
It includes a character for Stark that allows additional military challenges, a Lannister character who could potentially make a large power grab, and a new copy of Daenerys that is more universally useful than the one in the Targaryen box set (it doesn't just help dragons).
And there are maesters. Maesters are healers/scholars and advisers to powerful houses in the Game of Thrones universe. While studying to be a maester, a person forges their chain which is made up of a variety of materials that represent mastery in a specific field.
While Maester characters have been in the LCG since the Core set, this exansion allows for maesters to be a theme for a deck. The primary Maester mechanic in the game is chain attachments, which cost 1 gold each, but can be played from the agenda when you win a challenge. These attachments allow for very powerful abilities to be added to the character. The chain attachments in this chapter pack (1) allows a character to add a trait to any card in play whenever the attached character kneels and (2) makes a character a maester and adds 1 str per chain attachment on them. The following 5 Secrets of Oldtown chapter packs will a bunch of additional chain attachments.
Whether you want to go whole hog and create a Maester themed deck or if you just want to expand your library with some exceptionally useful cards, I recommend this chapter pack whole-heartedly.
