This guide is nothing more than a decent instruction manual for FFXI. The idea was good and if you started playing the game, let's say, back when it was first released in Japan, this so-called guide may have been helpful. But times change and so do MMORPG's. Don't get this guide unless you have a time machine so you can go back to when it would have been useful.

This is a great book for those JUST STARTING OUT on FFXI, much of the information from Fall of '03 still works with the current incarnation of FFXI, however, due to the ever-changing nature of FFXI, it will be out of date sometime next year. The job guidelines are great, and it's really geared to the new player. A good buy for any wanting to know a bit more about the game, but don't expect everything in here. There's a level 50 Cutoff on spells, equipment, and information in general (the game currently goes up to level 75) My copy has gotten much use, and I still break it out once in a while. ^_^

If you're new to the world of FFXI (which bears only a slight resemblance to well-known and firmly established FF universe), then this guide for the PS2 version is a very handy tome to have on hand. If you're new to MMORPGs in general then it's even handier still.To be clear - due to the enormous and theoretically never-ending play of FFXI, any guide will be (by definition) 'incomplete'. For instance, a guide to FFX could lay out every nook and cranny to be explored, every side quest, every item, etc... Not so with this guide. What the gamer gets is a broad overview of the game from selecting your character's 'race' and job, to the main quests and missions, to leveling your character, to maps of many areas - and even some tips and tricks along the way. So, if you're a MMORPG vet or just pick things up quickly, you can feel safe going with the in-game help. It's robust and along with the PlayOnline & Square Enix sites you should have plenty of info to get you going in the game. However, if you prefer to have a nicely formatted, glossy, and picture-laden volume of info sitting by your wireless keyboard while you play through to level 40 or so - then this is the book to pick up.
