The twisted cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is a statement of intent, while the cool jazz riffs from the band's trumpet player are part of what makes tracks like "Daria," "It's Coming Down," and "Frank Sinatra" so original. "The Distance" is a funked-up jam with a Chili Peppers chorus. --Jeff Bateman

So, let's pretend you've heard some Cake. Maybe you've heard "Going the Distance", which gets radio play, or "Short Skirt, Long Jacket", which I think has been in a movie or two. You're sitting here reading the reviews, wondering if the album is worth it. Let me help you with your decision: Go for it. They have a LOT of excellent numbers on this album... several radio hits that you'll remember, and several tricky songs that are waiting to be discovered. I am NOT A CAKE FAN. I don't listen to them terribly often. But this album is almost surreal in how effective and fun it is. Solid reasons to buy the album: "The Distance," "Stick-shifts and Safety-belts," "Short Skirt Long Jacket," "Never There," "Frank Sinatra," "Friend is a Four Letter Word..." and even the catchy yet annoying number that caused me to buy the album: their cover of "I Will Survive." If you've heard some Cake, and like them a little, this is a no-brainer.

Fashion Nugget by Cake
Zomba/Volcano
Explicit: Yes ("Nugget" is pretty much is the only offender, but it's a pretty good one)
Best Song: Friend Is A Four-Letter Word
Worst Song: She'll Come Back To Me
Ah, Cake. The first thing to mention about Cake (Because you just can't talk about Cake's big break without talking about Cake themselves) is John McCrea. McCrea's voice is absolutely brilliant. The guy sings with a half-funky, half-monotone voice that at times almost sounds like he's speaking. Not only is the monotone singing approach unique and absolutely addicting, McCrea can do more than that. He can do anything, from Country yelps, ("Stickshifts And Safetybelts") to pseudo-rap. ("The Distance") As a matter of fact, it's a real shame their claim to fame is "The Distance", since while that is a spectacular song, there are plenty of joys here. "Frank Sinatra" is a wonderful little gem with a spectacularly memorable chorus:
"We know of an ancient radiation
That affects dismembered constallations
A faintly gimmering radio station
While Frank Sinatra sings Stormy Weather
The flies and the spiders get along together
Cobwebs fall on an old skipping record."
And the fun doesn't stop there, for it is merely the first track.

This CD is awesome. Anyone who thinks different has something wrong with them. What makes them different from a lot of other bands today is there trumpet player and organs. Their odd lyrics also help.
1)Frank Sinatra-9.5/10, a great start to the CD, cool lyrics, and a catchy beat
2)The Distance-9.5/10, a single from the album, I always sing along with this one, it blends the guitars and trumpet well
3)Friend is a four letter word-8/10, it starts of OK but gets better as it goes along
4)Open Book-8.5/10, i like the chorus on this one, and I sing along with it alot, good trumpet solos
5)Daria-9/10, i like how it starts off only with only a piano and acoustic guitar and then all the instruments come in, i think this is some kind of love song
6)Race Car Ya-Yas-7.5/10, not bad, but not one of the best, it has very strange lyrics (the land where large fuzzy dice still hang like testicles from rear view mirrors, etc.) and it is the shortest one on the album clocking in at 1:20
7)I Will Survive-10/10, probably the best on the album, this cover of the donna summer song is so different from the original, but in a very good way, its long and has a lot of guitar and trumpet solos , makes me want to boogie
8)Stickshifts and Safetybelts-8.5/10, a sort of country song with some funny lyrics(A lot of good cars are japanese, etc.), its also very catchy
9)Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps-9.5/10, one of the best on the album, not one second of it is boring, good trumpet parts, a very jazz-like love song
10)It's Coming Down-9.5/10, another great "love" song with a catchy chorus, it all fits together so perfectly, I like how john mcrea does the lead vocals and the rest of the band responds
11)Nugget-8.
