Product Description

Product Description

In the 1930s the boyish look of the previous decade gave way to a more feminine silhouette, which defined the waist, accentuated the shouders and narrowed the hips. The year-by-year format allows these developments to be shown in detail. Day Wear, Evening Wear, Sport and Leisure Wear, Accessories, Underwear and Wedding Wear are included, and complete descriptions of each garment accompany each of the drawings, itemizing colour, cut, necklines, lapels, sleeves, pockets, fastenings, buttons and belts. The reference section includes a chart summarizing at a glance the evolution of fashion and garment-shapes, as well as biographies of outstanding 1930s designers.

About the Author

John Peacock's many books include Costume: 1066-1990's, 20th Century Fashion, and Men's Fashion, all published by Thames and Hudson.

1.0 out of 5 stars BE WARNED OVERPRICED!!!, Sep 27 2010
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1930s (Paperback)
I purchased this book from a used seller so that I could get it at the "reduced" used price of around $25 USD. When I received the book I was astonished to see how small it was. It is 6-3/4" wide and 8-3/8" high. Although it contains 281 illustrations, none of them are in colour and there is little explanation except for that in the back of the book. It is an ok reference book, but considering I PAID MORE THAN DOUBLE THE PRICE LISTED IN THE BOOKS COVER $10.95!!!!!! THIS BOOK IS A RIP OFF.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book only features rough sketches..., Dec 20 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1930s (Paperback)
Look closely at the cover of this book. It is filled only with such rough sketches of the day, evening, and sports wear from this decade. This is not a detailed, pattern-oriented fashion book. Rather, it serves better as a quick reference guide for a designer looking for inspiration from classic styles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great costume resource, Aug 14 2005
By L. Justman "costumer gal" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1930s (Paperback)
I always turn to John Peacock books when I want an overview of a decade for a costuming project. This one was a lot of help, as usual, for a general reference for a project set in 1934.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Reasonable look at fashion., Sep 4 2011
By John D. Schutt - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1930s (Paperback)
I was disappointed to see the artist's renderings rather than actual pictures. I must give credit, however, to the attempt to provide a complete look at all types of fashions involved in this period. It is an "OK" book.
