Product Description

Product Description

In the 1960s, "youth" was the watchword. Skirts became shorter and shorter until in 1965 the mini was born with the quintessential little-girl look: neat, flat-chested and long-legged. By the last years of the decade, the influence of the hippy movement was beginning to be felt in both women's and men's wear, bringing with it bright colours and psychedelic patterns. This book is part of a series charting the development of women's and men's clothing from 1900 onwards. It includes complete descriptions of each garment and accessories, itemizing colour, cut, necklines, lapels, sleeves, pockets, fastenings, buttons and belts. The year-by-year format progresses through day wear, evening wear, sportswear, leisurewear, underwear, negligee and wedding wear. The text is accompanied by costume drawings by John Peacock, and includes a chart summarizing the evolution of fashion, garment shapes and biographies of the outstanding designers of the decade.

Ingram

In the 1960s, "youth" was the watchword, and skirts became shorter and shorter with the advent of the mini. However, toward the end of the decade, hems dropped and the hippie movement introduced bright colors and psychedelic patterns. The Fashion Sourcebooks series charts the development of women's and men's clothing from 1900 onwards, with a volume devoted to the fashions of each decade. 285 illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fashion Sourcebook is Fashion Resource, Feb 6 2009
By
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1960s (Paperback)
I found this book to be amazingly descriptive and helpful in detailing the different fashions of each year in the 1960's. Though the drawings are in black and white (not like those shown on the cover), detailed descriptions of colours and fabrics are given in the back. For anybody who wants to know more about 1960's fashions, this is a great resource!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy refrence of 60's fashion, Oct 2 2002

This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1960s (Paperback)
This is a great tool to see an overview of a decade of fashion. It makes it easy to see the evaluation of style. The illustrations are distinct and well organized, with pages for daywear, evening wear, sports and leisure, wedding and underwear. There is a page of accessories for each year. There are not many men's fashions.
There are detailed descriptions of each illustration is in the back (in a tiny font.) I have all Peacock's decades now and I know they will be used often.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book runs a fine line between really bad & okay ref., Feb 15 1999
By donat-studio@cwix.com - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1960s (Paperback)
I was extremely disapointed after viewing this book. The illustrations are so bad, it's hard to look past it to see the clothing design. I wish the author would have hired an experienced fashion illustrator to compose the drawings in a sketching style of the time...1960's. I do have to give the author credit for the layout of the design progression per year. The book did contain many design references/illustrations for accessores. This is rare, as there are not many accessory design referece books.

last words; Okay reference for the 60's era of clothing & accessory design resource, but horrific illustration!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Fashion Reference Book, Aug 4 2005
By E. Ellis "ej000001" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fashion Sourcebooks 1960s (Paperback)
I throughly enjoyed this Fashion Reference book, but this comes with a few flaws. The illustrations are rather sparse and unentertaining. If you want to know anything about male fashion in the 60's please leave this book alone. But this is very good reference book for designers and vintage buyers who want to know about some general aspects of female 1960's clothes. The author orders the book by specific year, which is helpful to get further understanding of 1960's clothing.
