Review

"Dr. Fuhrman's powerful and practical guidelines apply for conditions ranging from the common cold to serious heart problems. This program provides an alternative to the costly and all-to-common side effects of sugery and drugs."--Andrew Nicholson, M.D., Director of Preventive Medicine, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

"By individually tailoring nutrition plans based on a case-by-case basis, Fuhrman has treated hundreds of patients with rheumatoid arthritis successfully."--Vegetarian Times

"This is where the future of medicine should be heading."--Ronald Cridland, M.D.

"This is neither alternative medicine nor conservative medicine, but rather progressive medicine. Dr. Fuhrman's approach offers individuals suffering from [chronic] diseases the only real chance for a meaningful cure. I have been fortunate to observe many of these outcomes firsthand and can testify to the power of this approach for certain diseases."--James Craner, M.D., M.P.H.

"Dr. Fuhrman's book is revolutionary. It shows clearly and unmistakably the way to recover health, and could change the prevailing way of treating disease."--Theodore Coumentakis, M.D.

"If you are lucky, you will read Dr. Furhman's book before you have subjected yourself to medications and medical procedures. This book is for those who want to take charge over their health and well-being, and for those who want to embark on a journey toward a more satisfying life."--Don Jeret, M.D.

"I know that every health seeker in America will want to read this book. It provides a working knowledge of vital information that is currently known to relatively few people. Share it with those you love."--John Pilla, M.D.

I love to eat and never thought I could go on a strict water fast but this book changed that. It motivated me to go on my first three day fast. I read the book primarily to discover if I could go on a fast with my medical problems. I have controlled type II diabetes and I also take medication for schizophrenia. In addition, I take vitamin and mineral supplements. The author explained that I could go on a fast and why avoiding supplements was important during a fast. He briefly states that fasting can improve certain autoimmune conditions like fibromyalgia, skin disorders, and other diseases.
I was mostly interested in how to fast, how to break a fast properly, and what physical symptoms to expect during a fast. I did feel some hunger during the first day but that went away when I drank water. I did not feel any hunger on the second or third day but I did miss the sensation of eating and tasting food. I felt just fine with no headaches or lightheadedness. I plan on going on my second three day fast in a couple months. By summer of next year, I hope to go on a seven to ten day fast, with a doctor's supervision.
You do not have to be supervised on a short three day fast but he does advise medical supervision for longer fasts. He also provides addresses and resources for medical professionals to receive training supervising patients on fasts.
He explains that even a thin person can fast safely. Dr. Fuhrman also advises that you eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and avoid junk food, especially sodas. I rarely give a book five stars but this one deserves it.

Fasting per say does nothing to the body. What a fast does is enable the human body to engage in "house-cleaning" in order to restore normality (to the best of the body's abilities).
Viz the Medical Journals there are over 500 studies on fasting, though much more research is needed. Dr Fuhrman mentions several of these on his website DrFuhrman.com and in his book.
If you undertake a fast for any period of time, I would talk to a doctor who is TRAINED in fasting, like Dr. Fuhrman, who has supervised 1000's of fasts. A physician who is not trained in fasting can be harmful since he is unable to differentiate between symptoms of a fast and symptoms of disease. An uneducated layman is even worse.
If you are looking for a step by stop program, then you will need Dr. Fuhrman's upcoming book, as the present book primarily focuses on principles, and the spectacular results achievable in reversing diseases such as uterine fibroids, lupus, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes (type II), and many, many others.
If you are skeptical I suggest you read this book and judge for yourself. You owe yourself that much. Let me end with a quote from Dr. Fuhrman's book:
After hearing about a natural food diet and therapeutic fasting, individuals may enthusiastically give it a try and get well. It is also possible that they may become excited about the sensibility of this approach and the prospect of finally recovering their health, but then go home to their friends and family and become discouraged after being told that they would be crazy for attempting such an "outrageous" treatment. They might have even called a few doctors they know only to be told that fasting is risky, dangerous and stupid.

It is a well written book in layman language but with scientific evidence. The book is very motivating. So much so that after reading half of it I started my 10 days fasting program. I assure you that most of the readers will decide for some kind of fasting, too. The fasting is difficult at the first stage (day 1 to day 3) but after that it is very invigorating. A friend of mine went through one months of fasting!!! Since applying Dr. Fuhrman's recommendations a few weeks ago, I have lost almost 20 pounds. I must also add here, that a very important part in the whole process was the advice of Dr. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150". Combining the wisdom of both authors does really bring great great results. These two books are my new bibles. They should be sold together.

As a newbie to fasting (I have done limited fasts in the past, but without knowing the physiological effects and optimum procedures) I found this book a very good introduction to it.
There are many websites and books on fasting, but I trusted the opinion of the author, since he is a medical doctor, and frequently gives evidence for his assertions. His medical explanations help clarify not only what is helpful and dangerous in a fast, but why. This, in my opinion, separates a credible expert from a crackpot in many fields and particularly for fasting.
Some items which may be constued as negative: this is not a step by step guide to fasting (as the author strongly reccomends medical supervision for fasts), and the author spends considerable space on his agenda about the importance of vegan dieting(though dieting is essential to a healthy fast, before and after).
This book is definitely worth the money for learning the principles of fasting.
