Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

This disc represents the bridge between Talking Heads' first two herky-jerkier albums and the next two funky ones. Fear of Music is more than just a bridge, though. It's the water under the bridge, the air, the animals, the cities the river flows through, and the heaven on top of it all: "...a place where nothing ever happens." Plenty happens here, however. The CD starts out with its feet off the ground and both arms in the air: "I Zimbra" is all-out celebration. The rest of the songs are pretty much exercises in simplicity: one-word titles with music to match. (Witness the lightness of "Air", the trippiness of "Drugs", the "ooga"-ness of "Animals".) David Byrne's artful naiveté ("Hold the paper up to the light/Some rays pass right through"), coupled with the whole band's musical playfulness (for example, the tuba on "Electric Guitar"), makes for fun fun fun. --Dan Leone

5.0 out of 5 stars don't fear the music, July 30 2009

One reviewer likened this to the Talking Heads' Revolver and it sort of seems like it was the album that showed that creative shift a la the Beatles did with the LP Revolver.

This is my fave album by the Heads and mainly because it has everything from killer drivin' danceable rockout tunes to funky weird spacey sounds to lyrics that address the dichtomy of modern society. Plus this thing holds up well even now in the 21st century as one of the best albums of all-time (no hype, kids, buy this and you'll see your parents were not as square as you think).

There really isn't a single duff track on this at all. Some are better than others, of course (mainly "Paper," "Cities" and "Life During Wartime").

Really deserves ten stars out of five.

4.0 out of 5 stars Experimental excursion, July 26 2007
By
Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (HALL OF FAME)
This review is from: Fear of Music (Audio CD)
Talking Heads third album opens with the Dada poem I Zimbra set to a jungle drum beat. The music is quite experimental, having few of the accessible tunes and hooks that are found on the previous albums on songs like The Big Country and Take Me To The River or ground-breaking singles like Love Goes To Building On Fire. Instead, there are complex rhythmic textures throughout and the tone is rather ominous, especially on Life During Wartime. The only gripping melody is found on the oneiric excursion Heaven, a rumination on the nature of time and sequencing of events. Fear Of Music is thus their least accessible work.
