4.0 out of 5 stars A new kind of zombie novel, Feb 10 2011

This review is from: Feed (Newsflesh, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am surprised to read the negative reviews of this book as I enjoyed it thoroughly! The heart of the book is the central relationship between Georgia and her brother, Shaun. It was tender and endearing - a new kind of bromance, really, which filled the emotional space usually reserved for the romantic thread. Both characters were well formed, the dialogue was sparkling and often witty, and the premise interesting. It posed the question: what would life be like twenty or thirty years down the track after an outbreak of a zombie virus (or any other kind of incurable disease)?

Grant took the concept and ran with it. This is not your standard blood and guts zombie story; this is a serious look at what life would be like after a world changing event that forces people behind walls. Grant created an interesting world peopled by interesting characters - and zombies - and made me care. I challenge you to be able to read the last couple of chapters without tears rolling down your eyes! I know I couldn't! I closed the book with a feeling of satisfaction and completion, and I can't ask for more than that. Can't wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely fabulous, Mar 2 2011
This review is from: Feed (Newsflesh, Book 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This really is a fabulous read. But you have to like the genre, and you have to not like the genre so much that you get mad when the conventions are all parodied. The characters are great, the premise is great, and the text's undermining and savaging of a lot of the genre's conventions is wonderful. Read it if you like smart books.

I am a huge fan of dystopian novels. However, I have never read a Zombie novel before, and this one is hard to put down.
