Product Description

Countess Irina (Lina Romay) lives on the island of Madeira, Portugal, where she must drain the "life force" of men and women for her own survival. One of her lovers/victims is a poet (Jack Taylor) who believes the undead countess is meant for him. Prolific exploitation director Jess Franco filmed this influential erotic chiller -- which established Romay (who Franco later married) as an erotic and horror film icon -- on location on Madeira.

3.0 out of 5 stars For sexploitation fans only Mar 9 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Though I liked many of Franco's films, such as 99 Women and Eugénie, and I love sexploitation and vampire movies like The Blood-Splattered Bride, Daughters of Darkness and Vampyres, I cannot say I'm not a little disappointed with Female Vampire. But I can't say I didn't like it either and it was definitely worth buying, at least for me. As usual with Franco, there's a lot of atmosphere to be enjoyed. I thought the opening scene was great, though a little cheesy. The music was nice and no need to say the locations were beautiful. Lina Romay is absolutely gorgeous and Jack Taylor is good as always, though I wish he played a more important part. I would have also gladly appreciated more dark romance and foggy woods and bloody kills and less porn and endless sex scenes. Unfortunately the picture and sound quality leaves a lot to be desired, but I guess that's to be expected with these old low-budget films. So overall it's an interesting little movie and you have to take it for what it is, but it's not really my cup of tea. Still I can see why so many people like it and how important it is in Franco's career.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a horror version but a sex version Jan 14 2001
Format:DVD
When you look at the coverart of this DVD, you would expect a horror movie. But instead of that, you get tons of boring nudity, no atmosphere and no real vampires. Yes, it's cut, nearly all the horror of the original version "Erotikill / Black Countess" has been removed. The female vampire in this movie doesn't kill with her fangs... Jess Franco directed some nice movies in the past : I can recommend "Awfull dr. Orloff" and "Bloody Judge", but he has made a lot of worthless trash too. Avoid if you are a horror fan. The additional footage (ten minutes) of the horror only version is definitely not enough... They should have made a DVD with the complete horror version!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated and Tired ... Jun 6 2009
Format:DVD
There are some films that hide their age well and are well worth watching many times after the first screening. Most of the Hammer films fall into this category. This film is not one of them.

Technically, there are 3 versions to the primary film on the DVD. However in reality it is one film with select scenes from each of the Horror and Extra versions available as trailers.

The story revolves around a Vampire that doesn't speak, likes to walk around naked and basically does nothing but stare at her victims. As for the content, the scenes try for the dramatic but end up flat and left me saying, more times than I can remember: is that it? The scenes themselves started off well enough with the beautiful (and naked as previously mentioned) seducing her victims with the hypnotic stare, but ended up not being very satisfying. Each scene in the end was a softcore display, which didn't really appeal to me. I would have prefered a more 'hordcore' edge to the scenes but you have to remember the time the film was made and realize that it was probably deemed to have that 'hardcore' edge then ... but now it simply appears: Dated and Tired ...

Hope this helps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wow
That Jess Franco sure was wacky. This ultra-sexy 70's vamp flick probably arouses me more than any modern softcore film, but it's still not as good as Vampire Femmes or Vampyres. Read more
