Like a soda pop left open all night, Bueller seems to have lost its effervescence over time. Sure, Matthew Broderick is still appealing as the perennial truant, Ferris, who fakes his parents out and takes one memorable day off from school. Jeffrey Jones is nasty and scheming as the principal who's out to catch him. Jennifer Grey is winning as Ferris's sister (who ends up making out in the police station with a prophetic vision of Charlie Sheen). But there's a definite sense that this film was of a particular time frame: the '80s. It's still fun, though. There's Ferris singing "Twist and Shout" during a Chicago parade, and a lovely sequence in the Art Institute. But don't get it and expect your kids to love it the way you did. I am afraid I can not go into too much detail as the movie counts on surprise and anticipation.
Three high school comrades Ferris Bueller (Mattew Brodrick), Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), and Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) take the day off. They have several adventures which take them to many fun locations among which are a parade, restaurant, and just skirt being detected. Even though this is a teenage fantasy everyone can enjoy it.
Ben Stein gives the performance of his life as the enthusiastic economics teacher. "Anybody...anybody?"
Meanwhile the principal Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), which knows of Ferris' devious ways, investigates and is foiled at every turn.
Ferris' jealous sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) has a few adventures of her own which include meeting a boy in the police station (Charlie Sheen.) She eventually comes to appreciate Ferris' ways.
Naive parents Katie (Cindy Pickett) and Tom (Lyman Ward) move blissfully through the movie only wanting what is best for their under the weather son.
For those musically inclined the movie is packed with great tunes.

Format:DVD
Paramount should be ashamed! Nearly a quarter of the film is not visable at the bottom of the screen. (Read the review by darkknight55.) I have a rare laserdisc issue which is in the wide screen format and every detail of the picture is clearly visable. In addition, the laserdisc version has a full rich powerful audio track, whereas the DVD issue sounds weak and lifeless. What's sad about this is that the DVD format has more potential than the somewhat bulky laserdisc format. The bottom line is that little or no care is being put into the production of most DVD releases. The movie itself gets 5 stars, but this particular DVD release gets only 1 star from me.

As always, when I replace my VHS copies of my movies with DVD's I check the format to make sure that I am getting true widescreen presentations. Ferris, I'm sad to say, is the worst that I have seen when it comes to the so-called widescreen format. If you have ever compared the full screen version to the DVD widescreen version you will see that all was done basically was to insert the black bars on the top and bottom of the picture. There are scenes where we should be seeing people's entire bodies but in the widescreen they are cut to the waistline. If you still have your VHS copy, KEEP IT! At least until the studios stop cheating us and start to actually release true widescreen formats on ALL of their DVD's and not just a select few.

Classic
This movie is a classic. Great for teens and even a bit young kids. One of my favourites. My 10 year old son loves it to.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. Who hasn't seen this movie? It rocks! Funny and clever from start to finish. The commentary is great too.
