This is one of those great reference books that you check out from the library, find what you need, return it, and go home happy knowing that you didn't pay $100.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of medicine, science, and art at affordable price, Feb 11 2005
By Mohamed F. El-Hewie "Mohamed F. El-Hewie" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Ferri's Clinical Advisor 2005 (Hardcover)
I could not believe my ears when I heard the cashier say $59.95. The book is hardcover, large page size, and 1380 pages. Each space of every page is exploited to the maximum. Even the inner flaps of the book cover are utilized in listing all medical entities.

Undoubtedly, the references and contributors are plenty, in quantity as well as in quality. My favorite section of the book is the clinical algorithms. They provide quick, concise, and extensive approach to diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

Section I, "Diseases and Disorders", is marvelously designed. It proceeds by alphabetic listings of diseases. Each entity is discussed in terms of basic information, diagnosis, treatment, pearls and considerations, and references. Each of these subsections is reasonably broken down to subtitles such as: definition, epidemiology, physical findings, etiology, differential diagnosis, and so on. Finding any issue related to diseases and disorders is faster and easier than Internet search, since the book is printed in carefully chosen font sizes that minimize visual distraction by the detailed text. Many disease entities are explained by x-rays, EKG, photographs, MRI, or CT scans.

Section II, "Differential Diagnosis", comes after 905 pages of diseases and disorders and extends over 76 pages. Each physical finding is followed by a list of causative diseases. These are often grouped under relating categories such as infections, neoplasms, genetic, hematological, and so on.

Section III, "Clinical Algorithms", emulates the flow charts of computational programming and spans over a hundred pages.

Section IV, "Laboratory Tests and Interpretation of Results"; contains many tables, charts, and drawings that greatly help in understanding the mechanism of technical diagnosis.

Section V, "Clinical Preventive Services", lists periodic health examinations for various age groups, from womb to tomb, vaccination, immunization, and occupational health problems.

The appendix also entails such great variety of issues such as definitions of many fitness, health, and nutrition terms, herbal medicine, herb and drug interactions, and relaxation techniques.
