Review

"...this book is an excellent one for young and old alike and can be highly recommended." -Scott Van Aken, modelingmadness.com

"Larry Hama's Fight to the Death... isn't your usual military survey of events: it is presented in graphic novel format and captures the facts of battle into a presentation filled with fictionalized adventure. More so than most nonfiction standard histories it brings to life the events and drama of Guadalcanal and is especially recommended for students just learning about events who will appreciate the intimacy of the graphic novel format... [This history] will also appeal to young adults studying the facts of military history - this audience will find a much more accessible format and history here." -The Bookwatch Midwest Book Review

Product Description

The battle of Guadalcanal brutally shattered the myth of Japanese invincibility. August 7, 1942, marked the first American amphibious assault of World War II, and the first attempt to secure the Japanese-controled island of Guadalcanal. Over 30,000 American and Japanese casualties were suffered during five months of some of the war's most vicious fighting.

From the ranks of the units that contested this campaign a seasoned fighting force of US veterans was created that, island by island, would sweep the Japanese back across the Pacific. The US Marines and Army halted the apparently unconquerable Japanese advance in its tracks.

This full-color comic book includes further reading, essential information on the background, aftermath and key players of the conflict. Its gripping comic strip narrative places the reader at the heart of the action, providing a thrilling account of the arduous struggle that faced soldiers such as valiant Medal of Honor winner Captain Joe Foss, and illustrates the Allies' first major offensive action of the Pacific War.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cactus Comic Book, Dec 2 2007
By Dennis Reilly - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fight to the Death: Battle of Guadalcanal (Paperback)
I expected much more from an Osprey publication. Even a comic book should tell a story with some continuity. FIGHT TO THE DEATH fails to do that and, it is a very poor introduction, for young people who would like to learn a little about the Guadalcanal campaign.
Page 47 offers some excellent suggested reading. The author apparently believed that research was not required.
Presenting history in this format is a fine idea. Hopefully, someone with an interest in his subject will provide the next offering.
