5.0 out of 5 stars Very readable for young adults May 6 2011

Gladiator-Fight for Freedom

Simon Scarrow is a flexible and very effective writer. I have read all his books with great interest and full enjoyment. He has an ability to cater for readers of all ages. In this book, the first of a series for young adults, he has maintained an easy to read, flowing style of writing without excessive details to confuse young readers or to slow down the development of events or the overall plot of the story.

The book is a great read for students from mid-primary to mid-high school age range. It gives readers considerable insight into Roman history, especially gladiatorial training and Roman attitudes to blood sports.

I read the book in a very short period of time and found it relaxing, informative and enjoyable enough to look forward to the next book in the series.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to Read April 14 2013
By Erik Martin Willen - Published on Amazon.com

Fight for Freedom by Simon Scarrow has an entertaining story for young readers. The story is very short and probably the first in a series. There is limited character development and the dialogues are - as most of Scarrows' books - very short and not well developed.

A young boy loses everything and is taken slave, and with a growing hate towards the people who has ruined his life he intends to find a powerful Roman that can help him and his mother whom also has become a slave. (I don't want to reveal too many spoilers) but there is something else in the story that makes this "one" stand out.

Even though the basic theme might seem old it works. The Book is a "fast" read. If I had been 30 years younger I would probably have given the book 5 stars, however, now I'm older and I will rate this book four stars. I do recommend this book for young readers; it's a great story for anyone 8-15, both boys and girls. To the "older" generation readers might think this book a bit childish.
2.0 out of 5 stars Scarrow is really too good for e-books!!!!! Mar 3 2013

I am a HUGE Scarrow fan. His e-book series just doesn't "cut it" for me. Story is too short and too rushed and NOT AT ALL SATISFYING. In fact, these so called e-books read like something the author dashed off during a lunch break. No character development, not much of a plot, not worth reading. On the other hand, I will continue to purchase COMPLETE books by Simon Scarrow (assuming he gets serious about writing something whorhwhile).
