3.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure, But Extremely Difficult to Complete, Feb 10 2010
By Frank - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Fighting Fantasy Gamebook #26 Bloodbones (Paperback)
This book has an interesting storyline and plot. But the author has made the adventure too difficult! Your character needs an Initial Skill level of 11 or 12 to make it all the way through -- and even then it's not guaranteed that you'll complete the story without being killed first. There are too many instances where using Luck comes into play needlessly, and these greatly increase the odds that you'll be killed and have to start over. There are a few puzzles in the book to solve. I found those to be easy except one of the later ones which seems to be crucial in order to defeat the Final Boss. I never solved that puzzle and, instead, cheated when I got to the part with the Final Boss. Without cheating, I must've tried to get through this book 75 times or so! My recommendation: simply have your character start with an Initial Skill of 12 and roll as instructed for your Initial Stamina and Initial Luck (i.e. leave those two attributes to chance). Doing this will give you at least a fighting chance of solving the book without being killed early on.

Another complaint is that early on in the story, whenever you come across two or more creatures to battle, the text will tell you how to treat the battle (i.e. either fight them all at once or fight them individually one after the other). Later on in the story, these instructions were not indicated in the text whenever you come across two or more creatures at once. I chose to fight them individually (to make it easier).

Overall, this is a well-written adventure book even though it is way too difficult to solve. It takes place in various locales such as a village, on a ship, in a jungle, in a temple, etc.. The illustrations are top-notch, as usual.
