Book Description

October 2002

Lindsay Gordon finds herself dragged into a sordid world of blackmail, prostitution, lies and murder when she investigates the case of a former colleague jailed for killing a notorious Glaswegian journalist. Final Edition is the third book in the popular Lindsay Gordon mystery series.

When Alison Maxwell, a well-known Glaswegian journalist with an irresistible sexual attraction to both sexes, is found murdered the police look no further than the owner of the scarf used to strangle her. Lindsay Gordon, however, has other ideas. Maxwell was a serial seductress who kept a secret record of her encounters - including one with Lindsay herself. Recalling the threats that followed the end of the relationship, Lindsay knows all too well the feelings of rage, fear and passion that Alison Maxwell could invoke.

Soon Lindsay is embroiled in an investigation involving blackmail, stolen government documents and the vested interests of a group of people determined to keep her from finding the truth.

From Amazon

This mystery, part of the popular Lindsay Gordon series, is set in Glasgow, Scotland. Author Val McDermid, who grew up in a Scottish mining community, captures the sharp, colorful dialects of characters who live in newly renovated yuppie flats, low rent dives, and everything in between. On her way to solve the mystery of one friend's murder and another's conviction for the same, scrappy, soft-hearted journalist Lindsay Gordon learns a thing or two she didn't expect--or want-- to learn about the complications of lesbian love. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

This intriguing second novel by the author of Report for Murder again casts lesbian Scottish journalist Lindsay Gordon. Lindsay is living temporarily in Italy when fellow writer Alison Maxwell is found strangled in Glasgow and the victim's ex-lover, journalist Jackie Mitchell, is convicted of the crime. On Lindsay's return to Scotland, Jackie's friends, including Lindsay's last lover, Cordelia Brown, and Cordelia's new mate, Claire Ogilvie, ask Lindsay to look into the murder. Lindsay agrees even though she hasn't recovered from her breakup with Cordelia, a recovery made harder when she reads Cordelia's new book and realizes how much excellent work her friend accomplished on the heels of her departure. She is even more daunted in her investigation when she discovers how Alison used and abused friendships. After Lindsay finds and decodes Alison's secret diary of sexual conquests--both male and female--she realizes that not only Jackie but many people probably wanted Alison dead. Only a thorough search through Alison's letters allow Lindsay and her new lover, Sophie, to solve the case. While the depiction of lesbian relationships may not appeal to some, this taut story exploring the limits of friendship is well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing, detailed mystery! May 16 2004
Format:Hardcover
I became a Val McDermid fan when I read "A Place of Execution", but it's taken me a while to read her earlier works, largely because they are difficult to find in the US. My perserverance was rewarded when I found "Open and Shut" in the library last week. McDermid's heroine, Lindsay Gordon, has returned to the UK after a self-imposed exile in Italy. A former journalist, she is asked to look into the conviction of a friend, Jackie Mitchell. Mitchell is accused of killing Alison Maxwell, a brilliant but amoral journalist who was once Linday's lover. Lindsay's investigations reveal that this case is far more complex than anyone could have imagined.
This novel is brilliantly detailed, with engrossing characters and gripping plot. The setting among professional lesbian women in Glasgow was at first daunting and a little bit foreign, but the story drew me in. These ladies are women like me and my friends, smart, funny and professionally dedicated. Read this book--if you can find it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this deadline Feb. 29 2000
Format:Paperback
Veteran mystery writer Val McDermid, in this third installment of the Lindsay Gordon series, presents with care an intense potboiler where, regardless of the outcome, emotions are bound to explode. If Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone has a lesbian alter ego, Lindsay is it; her ability to keep her cool and her focus, especially during instances of innuendo when alone with her ex-love, is especially admirable.
Fans of the traditional "whodunit" will enjoy this tale of passion and deception--in more ways than one--and Lindsay's search to find the truth, even at the cost of a friendship. A smooth pace in action and dialogue moves the reader quickly through the 200-plus pages of Deadline for Murder, and keeps one entralled until Lindsay does meet that deadline.

Format:Paperback
Reporter Lindsay Gordon learns the hard way that you can never go home again. When she returns to Glasgow after staying away for awhile due to the political repercussions from her previous investigation (see COMMON MURDER, a very good novel), she quickly finds out that her lover Cordelia Brown has found someone else, Claire Ogilvie. Lindsay's former lover, journalist Alison Maxwell, is dead, allegedly killed by one of Claire's former mates, Jackie Mitchell, who has been convicted of the crime. This may sound like "who's on first", but it is more lucid in the novel.
.... .. Claire has chutzpa as she asks Lindsay to investigate Alison's death because she believes that Jackie is innocent and wants new information for the appeal. Lindsay decides to look into the case for her own personal reasons. As Lindsay digs deep into the life of Alison, she realizes two startling facts about her swinging lifestyle. Alison had numerous lovers and wannabe lovers, and the case is much deeper than a simple murder. It leads to blackmail, prostitution, and espionage involving stolen classified government documents. If Lindsay is not careful where Alison's threads take her to, she may find herself as the next victim.
.... .. DEADLINE FOR MURDER is an exhilarating mystery novel that has numerous interesting characters, not the least being Lindsay. The story line is like the beginning of a roller coaster as it starts slowly up the incline and suddenly takes off at warp speed. Though the ardent feminism may turn off some readers, it really should not stop most mystery fans from enjoying a good book. Val McDermid, author of the Kate Brannigan series, is clearly in her element with this fabulous feminist mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and not so creepy as her later ones July 5 2005

Val McDermid can write and I'm always grateful for her lesbian characters who just happen to be lesbian rather than that being a plot device. Lately though her stuff has had a lot of gratuitous violence and in the last one a rape scene written to titillate - as if there weren't enough of those written by men. So it was great to find her older series with a more straight forward mystery, well plotted and with interesting characters. Highly recommended.

Another winner from the mind of Val McDermond. I loved the book and its twists and turns. Lyndsay remains true to herself and a stand up woman. I grew even fonder of the characters Val created. I await the next book from one of my favorite writers.
