HASH(0x9d95775c) out of 5 stars Great Book!! Aug. 5 2005
By Book Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I am not sure what some of the other reader's issue are with this book being a reprint (and who cares), I think this book had just the right amount of suspense and romance. I really liked the fact that you got to know all of the characters in this book and their history. This book takes you in the beginning when the characters are all young teenagers, which sets the major plot for the story. The second half of the book is sixteen or seventeen years later and shows you what has become of the characters and how dramatically their lives have been effected by the unsolved murders . I really liked the twist this book had in the end, and I found myself speed reading to get to the end just so I could find out who the culprit was. I highly recommend this book!

HASH(0x9d92fbe8) out of 5 stars So long and cliche; don't bother! May 28 2013
By Brandee - Published on Amazon.com
Don't bother reading this and for the love of all that is holy, don't pay for it! It dragged on and on. It was a punishment to get through the whole thing. The characters are annoying and stupid. I didn't care about a single one of them. There's no explanation for most of their actions and thoughts, which almost didn't matter because you just know what is going to happen next. I'm sure the author thought she had wonderful plot twists and unexpected events but she most definitely did not. It is so predictable. Each little "shocker" can be seen chapters ahead of the final supposedly shocking revelation. Since I was listening to the audio version, I had no idea when it would end, and each chapter was painful. I was actually groaning out loud at this terrible book, saying "Of course!" repeatedly and being continually annoyed at everyone's stupidity.

The writing itself is skilled, but the story line is ridiculous. It really is like Lisa Jackson wanted to add tons of excitement to a romance story. There is no "final scream" and by the end of the thing, I was hoping they would ALL just die in a fire. The only character I even liked was the sheriff. Why didn't she at least TRY to make her main characters likeable? She did a good job of creating revolting characters, but failed to make anyone else interesting, believable, or likeable. And how many times can one character throw up?? PLEASE.

Upon learning this is a reprint, I wonder how much of the disgusting, depraved behaviors were added in for the reprint to make the book more shocking. Bottom line, the romance story line is stupid and unbelievable, the mystery is not mysterious at all, but the depravity is actually depraved.

HASH(0x9d952bac) out of 5 stars A good read! Nov. 28 2005
By Armchair Interviews - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
At 16, Cassidy Buchanan fell hard for her father's new ranch hand, Brig McKenzie, who had been hired to break Cassidy's new colt. The 19-year-old bad boy had had his share of trouble with both the law and women. Cassidy's older sister Angie had eyes for him as well but for different reasons. Then a mysterious deadly fire at the Buchanan sawmill was blamed on Brig and he had to run.

Now, 17 years later, another mysterious fire at the same location severely injures Cassidy's husband and an unidentified man is dead. Everyone believes the fire is related to the first. Cassidy has to find out the truth. Who really set the original fire? Could Brig have returned?

Jackson has a great ear for dialogue and is adept at creating characters that come to life and stay with you long after the book is finished. Even her secondary characters are rich and full. There were many possible suspects and I wasn't certain who was guilty until just before Jackson made the revelation. She delved into all the emotions that an extremely dysfunctional family can experience. This book, at a hefty 530 pages, was probably 200 pages longer than it needed to be. Perhaps I would have been happier with the original.

Armchair Interviews says: Final Scream is an updated version of Intimacies, originally published in 1995.

HASH(0x9de768b8) out of 5 stars Lisa Jackson's best Oct. 11 2005
By LL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Mass Market Paperback
I've read several of Ms. Jackson's books, and I've always found them to be decent but I haven't ever been blown away.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I read the entire thing in one day; definetly a page turner! As another reviewer mentioned, Jackson does attempt to put in a lot of mystery and suspsense, but at least for me, I found it very effective. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

The characters were great. Brig was the typical "bad boy," and was both sexy and sweet enough that I could see why the heroine was so attracted. Cassidy also was very likable. She was a spirited tomboy, and very likeable. The romance between these two was especially sweet because we got to see them when they were young as well as in adulthood.

I was a little surprised by how much of the book is spent on the "back story." Based on the book's description, I was expecting there to be maybe a couple chapters of past history, and then the majority of the book spent with Cassidy's return to her home as as an adult. Instead, there was as much time spent in 1977 as in "the present." This worked out fine since the story of them as teens was interesting, but I wish there would have been a little more of them in the present. I thought the latter half of the book was really rushed. As much as I wanted Brig and Cassidy to be together, it was based primarily on their young love, rather than their relationship as adults. We simply didn't get to see enough of their "grown up" selves. Still, I wouldn't say this knocks it down from a 5 star read.

As for the mystery, I thought it was well done. The villan was neither too obvious, nor so obscure that it didn't make sense.

This was great for a fun read. And yes, it is fairly long, but like I said, it moves so quickly that I finished it in a day. I completely enjoyed it.

I normally love books by this author and this one had a great plot. But..I had to stop reading it at the point of Cassidy's "sexual awakening" since she was only 16 years old!!! I am surprised this didn't seem to bother other readers who posted reviews. I expected graphic descriptions of sex acts since I have read other books Ms Jackson has written but this was, plain and simple, statutory rape that we were expected to see as ok as she and Brig "were strongly attracted to each other. I wish the book description had some sort of "disclaimer" that would warn readers.
