Not unexpectedly, Lockwood's breezy style infuriates some important superiors, but readers will enjoy how he puts together a team (beautiful Ph.D. Karen Dawson and handsome computer whiz/convict Malavida Chacone) to track down Florida-based serial killer Leonard Land, he of the "brilliant, twisted" mind and "fat, gluttonous body." The story rambles at times and includes too many forced, nick-of-time heroics, some jarring noir pensees from Lockwood and an anomalous burst of piety from Karen ("Lead me out of this darkness. In the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen"). The bloody climax sees Malavida and Lockwood, both severely damaged, dragging themselves to the rescue of Karen, who's offered herself up as bait. It's a lightweight, generally enjoyable yarn, and if readers have seen it all before, well, they probably will again, sometime between dinner and the 11:00 news. Author tour.

Cannell, the creator of such television series as The Commish and author of The Plan (LJ 5/15/95), shows his TV roots in this thriller about a pair of U.S. Customs employees who stumble upon a serial killer. Leonard Land, a colossal young man who operates from a converted garbage barge in Florida, uses his computer hacking expertise to cover up a series of heinous mutilations. In the time-honored but cliched manner of so many writers in this genre, Cannell imbues his hero, Customs agent John Lockwood, with a healthy sense of disrespect for rules, regulations, and authority. Lockwood is paired with the beautiful egghead Karen "Awesome" Dawson, whose robust IQ is put to the test by her quarry's devilish hacking skills. Cannell plays fast and loose when writing about technology, and his characterizations sometimes stretch credibility, but his story's frenetic pace and the occasional fresh surprise will keep most readers tuned in until the end. You would think that someone like Cannell would know better than to write something like this. But apparently even he slips once in a while. If you haven't read one of his other books yet do that and leave this one alone. Otherwise go read someone else.

Crazy, Twisted, Sick...But best book i've ever read,

This is an amazing book, i by fluke found it in my school library, and after i was done reading it the school threw it away after the teacher told the librarians some things i had written in my chapter summaries. I pretty much showed everyone i know pages 20-22, which are the most twisted, sick thing u will ever see, crazy good book, i recomend it to everyone that has trouble finding sumthin to read, yeah, good twist middle-end of the book.just read it, and u will not be sorry, crazy good

Stephen J. Cannell writes telebooks or cinemabooks. Having given us such classic t.v. shows as ROCKFORD FILES, A-TEAM, and WISEGUY, he knows how to write action scenarios, and fill them with almost cardboard characters that work only because they're in his books. We have the renegade DOC agent, John Lockwood, divorced from his beautiful wife, separated from his sweet daughter; the beautiful, brilliant and lonely Karen Lawson, a victim of only doing what her father wanted, who finds herself paired with Lockwood; and the handsome dashing (think Johnny Depp) computer hacker who seeks revenge on the man who put him in jail (Lockwood). Throw in the obscenely vulgar villain named Leonard Land/Rat/Wind Minstrel, who suffered abuse as a child from his religously fanatical mother, and you have the ingredients for this enjoyable diversion.Toward the end, Cannell seems to make some incredulous things happen to hasten the plot, because if the two heroes are as bad off as they've been depicted up to this point, there is no way in hell they could do what they do at the end. But, hey, let's have fun, popcorn, etc., and enjoy this dose of high-velocity fluff.
