Additional Features

It's not that the folks at Pixar are geniuses when it comes to DVDs... well, come to think of it, their fifth DVD set shows these folks are wizards. It's not just that the two discs are packed with watchable extras that hardly reiterate the same information; it's how they are handled--funny, inventive, with a light touch--unlike many PR-driven discs. A good place to start is the filmmakers' jolly commentary track, which branches off into 31 minutes of behind-the-scene stuff, deleted scenes, and curious anecdotes (they can also be watched separately). Pixar's first making-of documentary is a most concise and interesting 25-minute examination that also sheds light on how the company works. With a digital-to-digital transfer, the film looks great and is available in widescreen or reformatted to full screen. The "Family Fun" disc includes another Pixar made-for-the-DVD gem, the 7-minute "Exploring the Reef" with Jean-Michel Cousteau (Jacques's son) being upstaged by Dori and Marlin; it's a hoot and teaches a fact or two you will remember about reefs. Both discs feature lovely menus that can be turned into virtual aquariums for your TV (by removing the text) featuring the knockout colors of the film's settings. Watch long enough for some shenanigans from the film's characters and vocal talent. Genius, pure genius. --Doug Thomas

– Helen Faradji.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another lesson in Cinema from Pixar, Jan 3 2004
By
the_frog (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Finding Nemo (2-disc Collector's Edition, Widescreen & Fullscreen) (DVD)
What should be the new lesson #1 in film school: Boundless technical wizardry cannot cover poor storytelling. Ultimately, every movie must tell a good story to be interesting. Pixar, who commands unparalleled technical resources, devotes more energy into producing quality stories than any other studio. (George Lucas, are you listening?)

That said, Finding Nemo is one of Pixar's lesser acheivements. Which is not to say that it is not very good (it is), but next to their other efforts (Toy Story 2, in particular), one can feel a slight lacking. The humor is a bit more juvenile than most of their movies (Mount WannaHockALugee leaping to mind), and the plot is slightly less sublime. If Toy Story 2 was aimed at 8-12 year olds, Finding Nemo is pointed more at ages 6-10.

With that said, it is still a very entertaining, well-written movie. Most of the laughs come from Ellen DeGeneres's exasperatingly absent-minded Dory, though the surfer dude/sea turtle Crush steals a few memorable minutes. The animation is, of course, beautiful and it is marvellously captured on DVD (HDTV owners will want this DVD to show off with). The set includes the theatrical widescreen, and an unsual fullscreen version, where, rather than pan-and-scan, Pixar re-rendered the movie in a larger window, so you actually see MORE in the fullscreen than widescreen.

The special features are typically rich, as they are in most Pixar movies. People who bought any other Pixar release will recognize the template.

All-in-all, a quality release just shy of perfection. Given the target audience, it should have tremendous replay value.

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie so totally rocks!, July 17 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Finding Nemo (2-disc Collector's Edition, Widescreen & Fullscreen) (DVD)
From the very begining, as every Disney Pixar movie does, Finding Nemo touches your heart. This is a very heart warming wonderful tale of a clown fish boy and his father, who go through two quite magnificent journeys. Along the way they run into some wonderful fun loving characters, who you can really relate to in your own life. This movie is great for the whole family and has something for everyone adventure, action, and plenty of comedy. It has a great all star cast. Finding Nemo will keep you glued to the screen unto the very end. Thank you to Disney and Pixar for another well put together masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, July 16 2007

My daughter and I enjoy watching this movie over and over. Everytime we see it I find something new, that I didn't notice before. The oceanography and marine biology are wonderfully accurate to real life. The movie has inspired us to visit the aquarium and research interesting sea life (like the flapjack octopus and clownfish). The story is funny, sweet, engaging and enjoyable for the whole family.
