Product Description

From Amazon.com

Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind. The relationship between Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family sparks both an imagined world and a quiet rebellion against the stuffy forces of respectability, given physical form by Barrie's resentful wife (Radha Mitchell, High Art) and Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie, McCabe and Mrs. Miller). This gentle silliness could have turned to treacle, but Depp and Winslet--along with newcomer Freddie Highmore as one of the boys--keep their feet on the earth while their eyes gaze into their dreams. Also featuring a comically crusty turn from Dustin Hoffman (who appeared in another Peter Pan-themed movie, Hook) as a long-suffering theater producer. --Bret Fetzer

3.0 out of 5 stars This DVD Contains A PUO Ad For Pontiac, Mar 27 2005

This review is from: Finding Neverland (Widescreen) (DVD)
This is a great movie with some excellent performances, with child actor Freddie Highmore stealing the show. However, this DVD contains a Pontiac ad that you cannot get out of sitting through. I found out from the internet that it's called a Prohibited User Operations (PUO) ad. This is the first time I've come across one and frankly I got so mad it took me awile to start watching the movie without spitting bile.
Imagine paying almost 30 bucks for a DVD and being forced to watch an automobile ad every time you pop in the DVD. It's enough to turn you into a raving conspiracy theorist.
Anyway, Johnny Depp's incredible as usual, and Barrie's story is a poignant one. Don't miss it, but I wouldn't recommend the DVD.

People shouldn't judge the movie just because there is a car add before it. I know we didn't buy the DVD to watch the add but rate the movie not the add! Anyhow I saw the movie too many times to count and still it gets to me, the emotions, the imagination, the acting and so on are so beautifully portrayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never mind the ad, this is golden, Mar 31 2009
This review is from: Finding Neverland (DVD)
This is a wonderful journey into the creation of Peter Pan, and the workings of the kind, generous heart and mind of the genius behind the story. His steadfast and unselfish giving to a family that was open enough to believe and pretend along with the real Peter Pan, Sir James Barrie, is completely captivating. Don't let a brief ad throw you off of enjoying this lovely movie - that's the time to go and make popcorn. If people reviewing focused less on the ad and more on the messages intended by this movie, they'd be better for it. We need more movies like this one, especially one that helps us understand and celebrate a brief snippet in the life of one man who shared his remarkable ability to help us all believe in the possibility of Neverland.
