This is an interesting book that provides a historical view that emphasises certain episodes in Christian history in each era that is discusssed. It also introduces events in the history of the church as it developed to the east, including early initiatives to expand the church in the Middle East and as far east as India. The fact that it is based on specific episodes around the lives of Christians in each era makes the narrative very interesting, more so than a strictly historical overview alone. Each chapter covers a different episode and is introduced with broad contextual information, followed by the specific setting for the episode and then the story of the people in the episode. A good read and useful in providing a broader view of church history, which so often addresses only Western European events.
