Product Description

Finding Ultra is Rich Roll’s incredible-but-true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever.
One cool evening in October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight at the time and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he could see where his current sedentary lifestyle was taking him.
Most of us, when granted such a moment of clarity, look the other way—but not Rich.
Plunging into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and that prioritized plant nutrition, and vowing to train daily, Rich morphed—in a matter of mere months—from out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. When one morning ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house to embark on a light jog and found himself running a near marathon, he knew he had to scale up his goals.
How many of us take up a sport at age forty and compete for the title of the world’s best within two years? Finding Ultra recounts Rich’s remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman competition, which pits the world’s fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running. And following that test, Rich conquered an even greater one: the Epic5—five Ironman-distance triathlons, each on a different Hawaiian island, all completed in less than a week.
But Finding Ultra is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats—and much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Rich’s account rivets—and, yes, it instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique. But this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism.
Ultimately, Finding Ultra is a beautifully written portrait of what willpower can accomplish. It challenges all of us to rethink what we’re capable of and urges us, implicitly and explicitly, to “go for it.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Inspiring Sept. 27 2012
This book was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a vegan, but I couldn't quite get inspired about the title 'Finding Ultra'. Finding What? I don't get it. Was he looking for a cat named Ultra that had gone missing or what was going on?? Then I found the book and it has a much longer sub title, but at least I now had a better idea of what the book was about, but I wouldn't say it just rolled off the tip of the tongue.

In this case, the only shortcoming with this book is its title. The rest of the book just simply ROCKS! I was so captivated by the time I had finished the introduction, that I could not put it down. I had emailed a handful of friends of mine before I had even reached chapter one. "You have got to read this book" I told them. None of them had ever heard of it, or of Rich Roll, nor had I. Now I realize we must have been living under a rock to have not known about such an accomplished individual.

Rich is the real deal. An incredible athlete who overcame many challenges to reach the pinnacle of fitness, and that is just the beginning. It was his raw, authentic and genuine honesty that really touched my heart, as he shares personal details of his struggle with alcohol, his relationships, finding his way early in his career, etc. As a reader, you feel you're going along on a ride with him through important points in his life, sharing his highs and lows. By the end of the book, you want to meet him, as he comes across like a regular, every-man, and not an arrogant self-absorbed super-star athlete, increasingly rare these days, if you are to believe the headlines.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Dec 16 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In Finding Ultra, Rich Roll detailed his metamorphosis from an out of shape, listless forty year old to an athlete celebrated for his accomplishments. The account is fast-paced, and includes just the right amount of back story. The great value of this book is that it documents what most of us could accomplish if we are willing. His lists of accomplishments are beside the point; his decision to recreate himself is the message. My only real criticism of this book is that it can be a touch heavy on the 'here's what I've learned about life that you need to know' angle. Just by sharing his experience, the same point would have been made without all of the internal dialogue and 'here's what life's about.' I highly recommend this read if you are fascinated with what some people can accomplish with equal helpings of determination, connections, and insanity :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for Ultra Atheletes Aug. 1 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a real story about a real guy who has real life struggles. Rich tells his story with humility and humour and clearly communicates his weaknesses and his path to ultra fitness. This really is a story about personal growth and acheiving your potential when faced with everything life throws at you. All of us may never train to become a world class ultra athelete, that is not the point of Rich's story. His point is that we all have the power within us to achieve something higher, regardless of what your goal is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring but also pitchy June 28 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
A quick and interesting read on the challenges one man overcomes to get back on track. The author (Rich Roll) went from shy adolescent boy to the top of the world in swimming and education only to find his world crumbles (you'll have to read the book to find out why).

Now at middle age, Rich finds himself overweight, out of shape, and struggling to understand how he got there.

The majority of the book covers how Rich turns his life around again and completes what can only be described as torture on his body given the grueling pace; but also salve for his soul given the beautiful places visited both in person but also in his mind.

What I LOVED about this book was the sheer determination, guts and moxy needed to get where he ultimately ends up. What I DISLIKED about this book was the author appears to now be in the business of selling his nutritional solution. I very much disliked the intrusion of the sales pitch into the story - but ultimately loved the turn around. (From my goodreads review).

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was inspiring Sept. 23 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was inspirational for me. It led me to read other Ultra marathon books by Scott Jurek and Christopher McDougall. What I found very interesting is that the quest for a diet to attain peak performance leads many runners to eat vegan. I have overhauled my diet since reading these a month ago and feel great.

Enjoyable light reading. Inspiration and some great tips about running which cut through a lot of the BS out there. Overall an enjoyable--and recommended--read for runners or those who just need some help getting off the couch.
