Book Description

May 22 2012
Finding Ultra is Rich Roll’s incredible-but-true account of achieving one of the most awe-inspiring midlife physical transformations ever.

One cool evening in October 2006, the night before he was to turn forty, Rich experienced a chilling glimpse of his future. Nearly fifty pounds overweight at the time and unable to climb the stairs without stopping, he could see where his current sedentary lifestyle was taking him.

Most of us, when granted such a moment of clarity, look the other way—but not Rich.

Plunging into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and that prioritized plant nutrition, and vowing to train daily, Rich morphed—in a matter of mere months—from out-of-shape midlifer to endurance machine. When one morning ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house to embark on a light jog and found himself running a near marathon, he knew he had to scale up his goals.

How many of us take up a sport at age forty and compete for the title of the world’s best within two years? Finding Ultra recounts Rich’s remarkable journey to the starting line of the elite Ultraman competition, which pits the world’s fittest humans against each other in a 320-mile ordeal of swimming, biking, and running. And following that test, Rich conquered an even greater one: the Epic5—five Ironman-distance triathlons, each on a different Hawaiian island, all completed in less than a week.

But Finding Ultra is much more than an edge-of-the-seat look at a series of jaw-dropping athletic feats—and much more than a practical training manual for those who would attempt a similar transformation. Yes, Rich’s account rivets—and, yes, it instructs, providing information that will be invaluable to anyone who wants to change their physique. But this book is most notable as a powerful testament to human resiliency, for as we learn early on, Rich’s childhood posed numerous physical and social challenges, and his early adulthood featured a fierce battle with alcoholism.

Ultimately, Finding Ultra is a beautifully written portrait of what willpower can accomplish. It challenges all of us to rethink what we’re capable of and urges us, implicitly and explicitly, to “go for it.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Inspiring Sep 27 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book was recommended to me by a friend of mine who is a vegan, but I couldn't quite get inspired about the title 'Finding Ultra'. Finding What? I don't get it. Was he looking for a cat named Ultra that had gone missing or what was going on?? Then I found the book and it has a much longer sub title, but at least I now had a better idea of what the book was about, but I wouldn't say it just rolled off the tip of the tongue.

In this case, the only shortcoming with this book is its title. The rest of the book just simply ROCKS! I was so captivated by the time I had finished the introduction, that I could not put it down. I had emailed a handful of friends of mine before I had even reached chapter one. "You have got to read this book" I told them. None of them had ever heard of it, or of Rich Roll, nor had I. Now I realize we must have been living under a rock to have not known about such an accomplished individual.

Rich is the real deal. An incredible athlete who overcame many challenges to reach the pinnacle of fitness, and that is just the beginning. It was his raw, authentic and genuine honesty that really touched my heart, as he shares personal details of his struggle with alcohol, his relationships, finding his way early in his career, etc. As a reader, you feel you're going along on a ride with him through important points in his life, sharing his highs and lows. By the end of the book, you want to meet him, as he comes across like a regular, every-man, and not an arrogant self-absorbed super-star athlete, increasingly rare these days, if you are to believe the headlines.

The icing on the cake, at least for me, is that he not only competes in gruelling athletic events, and wins them, but that he does this on what he terms 'PlantPower', in other words eating as a vegan. He is clear that it is only because he feels strong and energetic eating this way, and leaves out any reference to animal rights or environmental concerns, which many will find refreshing. Rich is living proof that incredible athletic performance is possible by only ingesting a plant-based diet. This is great inspiration to anyone who desires to be more physically fit, but who might have hesitations about being able to accomplish this on a vegan diet. There seems to be a shortage of roll models in this area.

If someone is not inspired by Rich Roll's story, they are not breathing. Reading 'Finding Ultra' has given me renewed vigor, committment, energy and hope that if he can push his body to the point he does, that all of us are truly capable of much, much more ourselves. And I also love the fact that his great feats were accomplished over the age of fourty! By the end of the book, you want to order 'whatever he is having', which puts him in a great spot to educate and inform others who will want to emulate his nutrition and training. I will be researching anything I can find on him, potentially purchasing any products he recommends, and following his career and story. And contiuing to recommend this book to not only vegans, but also sports enthusiasts and anyone struggling with addictions or anyone who is stuck in a rut and needs motivation to become something more. This book should be a 'must read'. You will not be disapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Meaning Jun 22 2012
By Warren Green TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the movie Without Limits (Widescreen/Full Screen), Bill Bowerman, while addressing his first year distance track runners, says, "Running, one might say, is a rather absurd activity with which to be exhausting ourselves. But if you can find meaning in the kind of running it takes to stay on this team, chances are you can find meaning in another absurd activity. Life!"

While Rich Roll is not specifically a runner, he did manage to turn himself into an incredible ( plant-based ) endurance athlete ( awarded the distinction of being one of the 25 fittest men in the world by Men's Fitness Magazine ) within a year of his 40th birthday. Years earlier, he had succumb to alcohol, undermining some early success as a college swimmer, and likely "pacifying" him into a much more conventional way of life.

Fast forward twenty years, and he's become an overweight attorney, and someone who gets winded climbing a single flight of stairs. He's not in as rough a shape as Phil Staples, ( see Fat Sick & Nearly Dead) but he can definitely see the writing on the wall.

I'm looking forward to meeting Rich Roll in a couple of months, because I enjoy hearing the life stories of people who've overcome adversity, and struggled to fit into a culture and society that feels increasingly strange, and often absurd.
